Does anyone know if serato capable mixers can be used as soundcards? My Cousin has the rane sixtyfour and I was thinking of bringing my controller to one of his parties and trying an ableton set through it.

for ableton, I plugged my laptop into it once to use serato and I noticed it in my list of ASIO cards the next time I opened up ableton. made me wonder since it would somewhat simplify the process of setting up to dj with ableton.

the sixtyfour and some other rane mixers have the serato soundcard stuff built in, but I wouldn't be surprised if they made it proprietary to serato or something.

thats debatable, but the point is, its not djing & most clubs will tell you to fuck off if you turned up with that kinda gear (unless you're actually skrillex)

I wouldn't think so. I doubt OP will do anything more than small parties to start off with anyway.

I'm sure the APC/Ableton combo would work fine for DJing, just get your MIDI assignments on the controller sorted and you're away.

well if you're using it the same way skrillboy uses his trigger finger then you might get away with 2 or 3 tunes before they kick you off haha

but i guess using it in the same way sbtrkt uses ableton, then you should be ok

Nah they'll book you for festivals and put fuckin 'live set' behind your name on the flyer

I agree it's not DJing when you're using Ableton though, maybe that's why they put live behind yr name

Am I missing something? As far as I can tell, doing a set through clip launching in Live is more impressive and creative than filtering songs together. In fact, I can't really think of any relevant "traditional djing" skills that are more difficult than piecing a song together (which, given that pretty much all Ableton djs are producers isn't exactly a feat itself). From my own experience it seems that the biggest skills you have to master are reading a crowd properly and knowing your collection inside out, the technical aspects really aren't all that technical.

Warping tracks in ableton kind of sucks though, i would save for decks and gear/records, but by all means rock each and every party you can, laptop rig whatever who cares

But it's not all that much harder either with modern gear. Beatmatching and all of the inconveniences of djing in the past are virtually gone. Everyone's looking at waveforms regardless of the gear they're using (unless for some reason you're still spinning non timecode vinyl). Seems like the people that upsell its difficulty are the ones forcing themselves to use inefficient and outdated methods.

Unless you were referring to ableton djing not being as easy as I implied, in which case I withdraw everything as I have no experience with it.
