zap pow wrote: Live dubbing on soundsystems wasn't a feature in the early to mid 70s afaik.
Tubby's career with soundsystems started in the late 50's and his own "tubby's home town hi'fi" used homemade effects from around the the mid 60's.
zap pow wrote: Similarly deejays chatting over instrumentals is something that goes back to the 60s - Treasure Isle, Studio One etc.
again, toasting became popular around the late 60's, while tubby was working with Treasure Isle where he made instrumental "Versions" for use as b-sides.

altho is it arguable that tubby made the first instrumental "dub", his hi-fi was definatly the one of the earliest and most popular soundsystems to use them to great effect

Fair do's - is any audio for this? - there was a tape floating about a while back but I never got it, fool that I am...

Sure but toasting in between tracks surely goes back to the fifties over r&b stuff? I dunno if Tubby can take the full credit for that one, despite clearly being a major figure...

of course, tubby was no toaster so credit for that is out of the question, but his work helped to merge the mic and the music, making vocal styles more rhythmical, and thus making toasters/djs more of a vital and artistically credible part of the soundsystem culture.

coxsone's was well ahead of tubby in terms of actual timescale in having a dj working the soundsystem...however tubby's influence of the path of dub music is undisputed....pure heavyweight. I have some cassette dubs of u-roy at tubby's hifi which I will try and dig out and post....quality is pure ruffage but history is all there...
