no unwritten rules man. request line still hits hard, and sht gets old fast for me...even if i hear the tune rinsed online forever, when you feel it on a proper system, its new all over again. then you factor in how the tune is mixed in/out, cmon, its dubplate culture n all, but this was one of the things that really pissed me off about jungle: people were all about playing the newest sht. and of course being in the states we're gettin it much later if at all, but im not going to avoid playing a quality tune just cause some music snob is reluctantly nodding his head in the crowd but secretly detesting the selection. some of the more formulaic stuff nowadays probo will not keep as long, but not because its old. Mos def. Every track is circumstantial to the individual playing it and the purpose it's getting played. I'm sure if Mala played Warrior Dubs for a retirement center it just might not get the same response as if this where at say.. the UndergroundSFjason burns wrote:i think it can depend on your crowd actually. for example i know that anywhere i play around here (Ohio, usa.) nobody's really heard anything anyway. every set is like an intro to dubstep.
and it's always seemed to me that those dj's who concern themselvs with always having the newest of the new tunes are sacrificing the interest of the crowd for the envy and respect of the other 4 dj's who might be there.
Although that would be pretty rad if Mala blew it up at a retirement center. Jeeeaaahhhh!

theres a fine line between anthem and overplayed. and sometimes its jsut a matter of timing. ntype played skream & warrior queens check it in LA and they flipped. i cant tell you how many times ive heard that tune (albeit not at a party) and how much i prefer the instrumental, but i lost my shit along with everyone else. couldnt see that coming. it just worked.
f'real... for me its all about digging up a couple old gems and breathing some new life into em by mixing em with some fresh shit.... like throwing some wookie with some burialdeamonds wrote:str8 up and down, if it gets my fingers in the air......Little Boh Peep wrote:I'll play something for as long as I still like it, and can find a stellar mix for it.

its all about forgetting, then rediscovering tunes. i love listening back to old tunes and seeing how a sound has delevoped over the years.
plus, when an old tune gets played out it always sounds great because all the other dj's are to busy playing all the newest rinse outs.
just saw mary ann hobbs at glade, she dropped Mud and it went off, pull and all! still love that tune!
