Nice chain, but you could do with using a compressor in there somewhere

I would drop the distortion.

Yeah, multiband compressor instead would do

synth -> distortion -> compression -> brickwall limiter -> distortion -> distortion -> reverb -> distortion -> delay -> distortion -> tube saturation -> brickwall limiter -> gate -> EQ -> distortion -> multiband compressor -> multiband compressor -> multiband compressor
gets that nice growling diarrhea wobble bass. make sure to set compressors to 1:1 ratio. this step is very important.
Im skeptical about this considering there is so much compression and limiting...in the limiting alone wouldnt that chain become distorted with over limiting or are you very light on the threshold?

I dont think those are serious responses....
anyway, usually
EQ - to cut what isnt needed
Distortion 1
Maybe Chorus or Phaser depending on the sound
Distortion 2
EQ Again to tidy up
Compression

And a lot of tinkering/subtle automation. The filter delay and utility only goes on if I want to widen the sound. I've kept this as a Live effect rack...throw 3 or 4 instances on and automate til my tits turn blue.
Whoa whoa whoa hold up. There is absolutely no reason to go comp -> comp -> comp. Especially two separate times in one chain. That's just silly.
Why's that? It makes sense to me to compress each band to taste, then the overall sound, then each band again. If I was just trying to do traditional loudening compression it wouldn't make sense, but when im really digging to bring out certain harmonics it helps. And of course there's a couple eqs in the there as well.

not enough compression? im sure you can bounce and compress some more

Compression after EQ? Any reason?

To compress it. Duh.
OT, for brostep basses, Light compression-overdrive-distortion-anything to add flavor/movement-general compression-eq. I usually do this through some overly complex bussing though, haha.

You can look at EQ after/before compression as different instruments. Sometimes you don't want some frequencies to trigger the compressor, so you can EQ beforehand. Other times you'll want to clean up after compression, so you'll put an EQ after it.

depends what sound you're going for....but for a lot of my drums tracks for example I'll go
EQ--->reverb---->echo/delay(possibly)---->compression(possibly)----->EQ

If you know what every effect does, you'll know in what order to chain them to get the desired result imo.
Like de-essing is done by eqing the compressor's sidechain in, but that makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

Compression after EQ? Any reason?
No specific reason you could probably swap them and not see much of a difference as long as there is another EQ at the end of the chain somewhere, and compressior is usually last
but anyway here is my latest bass patch + FX
Operator in 4 osc FM mode
Fabfilter saturn
Camelphat
TAL-Tube
EQ
SatuRator
Compressor
Utility set to 50% width

I dont really want to subscribe myself to this thread but if anyone saw the mau5hax session, you would know that three compressors in a row can be very usefull

nah m8, cuz when you reverb into distortion, then delay that into another distortion, it clears the whole thing up and adds loads of punch and clarity. but the real key is the tube saturation, just gets the amazing warm gritty feel to my skrillex growl screech wobble

Wait, they name something 'mau5hax' and then expect people to watch it?

It was deadmau5 with a few other big producers sitting making a tune on webcam, i think it was kill the noise (i might be wrong) who showed how 3 compressors off th trot can make a synth with mad LFOs on it make a really nice growl

the thing is that can be done even easier with just 1 distortion plugin.
i still think using 3 compressors in one chain is retarded. i dont care if mau5hax, deadmau5 or aliv3mau5 says its useful.
