Before. I like bongs too, whenever there's a birthday in my group of friends buying a bong together for the person is a standard. We give them names too (Iceberg, Dr. Pepper...). But yeah I definitely prefer joints myself, bongs get me straight up stoned after 3 hits

Before. Putting it in after is a bit of a gamble...

I roll backwards too, but can't back roll. I tuck towards myself using both index fingers, as opposed to away, with both thumbs. If that makes sense. Found it easier to tuck like that was I was first learning to roll and never really stopped.

No doozle, you roll the roach tight and when it enters the paper you release it and it expands.
I also roll an M into the middle of the roach to help prevent shit from sucking through.

It looks like an @ sign but with an M in the middle.

Bongs have always been harsher than joints in my experience, also on the subject of roach before or after rolling, it seems like a generational thing, all the people I know who put the roach in after have been over the age of 35, dont know anyone my age who doesnt roll roach first
