Yes. If it doesn't matter if your speakers colour your sound and don't give you a true representation of how your music sound why would you spend extra money on them, why not just buy any old set of speakers?

I never said it doesn't matter if your speakers color your sound, I just said comparing the flatness of studio monitors is generally a waste of time as this "true representation" is relative to the speakers your listening through (unless you mentally know exactly what your mix should sound like by visually analyzing the spectrum).

It's like comparing the engines of a Lamborghini Gallardo and an R8-some tight end car enthusiasts might knit pick on irrelevant details, but some random guy upgrading from an S4 is just going to be like "FUCK YEAH IM DRIVING AN R8 (or Gallardo)!!!" and will have no trouble getting that car from A to B regardless of whether one accelerates vaguely faster. Meh...well he's shopping for low-mid range monitors, so maybe a BMW vs Mercedes would be a better analogy, but whatever.

My point is that debating the flatness of a Rokit 5 vs MSP5 (two speakers both already designed to be flat enough for studio use) is pointless. They'll both get you to a great mix if you know what you're doing, and the upgrade from headphones or whatever he was using before will be such a revelation that he won't even care. Or at least I didn't, I was too excited to listen through my music collection to hear all the details I was missing out on for years.

Worst case if you don't trust the flatness, drag another well-mixed track into your daw and a/b it.

Yeah but for a first purchase, he might as well do it right and go for one with the flattest response, which mind you doesn't truly exist in that price range anyway. T€hey will have faults you will have to compensate for, low end/mid range/or high end. The important thing is to make sure the fault is only in one area and not all.

Also, no one mentioned 6" monitors. They are still around, and that extra size does help a lot in the frequency response and volume. In that price range, you could find some from Mackie/Tapco, Tannoy, KRK, Event and more. Also don't pay too much attention to the numbers they list on their specs, it's marketing. When was the last time your phone/PSP/etc battery lasted the advertised 25 or 35 hours... same thing.

More bass output isn't always good either and can really trick you, especially in the average room. I'd much rather have a tighter low end and mid range than booming sub bass.

Well yeah, but I mean, I went and listened and just felt that with the KRK's they seemed a bit more bass heavy, and with the HS80s the kicks cut through alot smoother and cleaner, so I thought of them as the best.

yea i always preferred 6" monitors over 5"s and usually not that much of a jump in price
bring your own reference material on a usb thumb drive or cd to test em out

As i probably will get a guitar aswell what monitors would you say are best for around £200-£250. What are the best 5inch or 6inch ones that are in that price range. would you recommend getitn gused ones aswell or new?

looking around, i don't think i've ever owned a new pair of monitors. for 200 bucks you can probably find an old set of tannoy reveals.
