Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
I'm gonna buy one in september but I don't know whether to get the high-end 13" Air or Pro.

Watch out though because some of them weigh a ton. The one I have atm is 17" and weighs a staggering 3.6kgs, which is way too much to take with me every day to uni.
Can't really complain though because I got it for free.
Also avoid Acer at all costs.
Advertised (Read leaked http://ultrabook.it168.com/tu/1360584.shtml) weight for the new xps 15 is 5.6 pounds or therabouts, that's not that much heavier than the old macbook pros so should be fine. I'd go for the new retina macbook tbh, but i'd have to get the 750 gig ssd, that's the lower limit of my storage needs which takes it to £2,240 with my student discount, not bad but I think the dell will come in under that with 1.2 tb hybrid ssd/hdd
Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
Given the topic of this thread, Why is everyone planning on getting a Retina MBP over the regular one?

The screen and form factor are what seals it for me, although i'd like to wait and see more temperature stats from it, can't help but think apple may have just invented a pocket thermonuclear devicecollige wrote:Given the topic of this thread, Why is everyone planning on getting a Retina MBP over the regular one?
Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
I'd wait a year or 2 though. It'll probably be cheaper and better than. Same happened with (and still happens) with the Air.
Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
Yeah, same with all laptops though. SSD's will decrease in price massively over the next couple of years, bringing the prices crashing down. I wish the cloud was a viable storage facility for music and such.NilsFG wrote:I'd wait a year or 2 though. It'll probably be cheaper and better than. If something has to describe the western impatience and rushing culture it's ssd drives
Although for video / 3d effects it makes a huge difference, but they'll still use massive render farms for that anyway.

I imagine they'd be good for producing on, loading large sample libraries and such. Mine are on a 5200 rpm 1tb external using usb 2.0 atm tho so anything would seem quicker
Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
As a designer, the new screens are making me leak sticky fluids everywhere.
But like fuck can I afford anything like that for the foreseeable future.
Used to be a die-hard PC enthusiast, now I wouldn't switch as my primary for anything. Still want a powerhouse PC at home for rendering though

Yeah, I do producer stuff on internal memory.Blenky119 wrote:AxeD wrote:If something has to describe the western impatience and rushing culture it's ssd drives

HDD or SSD?
Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
hdd. Never have to wait for anything to load, but I don't do a lot of sampling anyway.
Solid state is kind of like driving 10 miles over the speed limit instead of leaving a few minutes earlier

Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
Good analogy. Hopefully the SSD portion of the hybrid drive that get's put into the new xps 15 is large enough to install a lot of programmes on to rather than just windows. Rather have my programmes opening lightning fast and taking slightly more time to load data than the opposite tbhAxeD wrote:hdd. Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
Again, a dick move from Apple but it's all about giving and taking.
How many cell phone manufacturers have changed sockets over time without anyone complaining?
Loads. Also weird & esoteric sockets.
Plus there will probably be an adapter. Still is a dick move though. But yeah. Give & take.

I wouldn't have a problem if they were moving to use micro usb like all other phone manufacturers are so there was a universal standard, but changing it to another proprietary format helps no one but themselves

But apple connectors do far more than standard micro usb like the ability to carry audio & video.Blenky119 wrote:NilsFG wrote:Again, a dick move from Apple but it's all about giving and taking.

Re: MacBook Pro: Unfixable?
Indeed the reason why using a proprietary connector has benefit is because you can use your own active cables.
You can take some of the circuitry from the built-in connectors out of the device and put them in the cable itself (active cables).
That's why it's about giving and taking. If you want smaller devices, active cables can help.
