You would be surprised at how creative and inspiring sampling can be...
Shit, even just bouncing your stems to audio can get me interested in a stale song again!

this thread has been done over and over but I've found recently that collaborating is THE SHIT when it comes to boosting creativity
face to face is best, but internet collabs work too

Listen to it all the way through.
Sample it, taking at least one element from each track on the album.
Attempt to make a tune out of just those samples and nothing else.
this is a good advice, restricting yourself to fewer options forces you to be better with what you have...You can only sample? Then learn how to sample better.
One thing you can do is to imagine a story that your track will tell. Like making a music for a movie or something. I found that when I start with the idea of making a great reece or or a super snare I often end up with just that, great reece that cant fit anywhere.

Can't disagree more, sampling itself is pretty much an art form.

don't imitate, innovate
avoid to listen current releases
do not limit yourself to only a few genres, listen as much different music you can
forget genres, tags, clichè, dogmatic shit

It works for me.
I think it will work for others.
Take a listen to any of my tunes and see if you can spot a single recognizable sample.
It's what you do with it that counts.

i really like electricface's use of tribal singing and chanting, do you get those in sample packs or do you record them yourself in a township or something?

I generally go to the more dangerous parts of SA and prance around in my undies.
When shit kicks off, I start recording.
In short, I spend loads of time finding them and recording them.
I am however making a concerted effort to record my own primarily.

do you go into townships and just stand around subtly holding a recorder? or is there some other way?

Basically a lot of african dance groups perform on weekends in public spaces.
So either it's tribal drumming with rural style dancing.
Or it's a group of xylophone players on the beach front.
That reminds me actually, I need to go sample the xylophone players, they're shit hot.
Or just attending a sunday service and recording the rejoicing.
I get looks walking out during the sermon but who cares, I don't have a religious bone in my body.

Okay, completely unrelated to this topic, how popular is Die Antwoord around there?

It isn't.
I prefer when Ninja was Waddy Jones and the Constructus Corporation.
Even Max Normal TV is better.
There's a dude here in SA called Jack Parow who is still pushing the whole zeph thing pretty hard.
He's the guy from Die Antwoord with the huge peak cap.
He sings about tokoloshis and party party party.
It's all very lame and not very good music imo.
It's quite big with the afrikaans kids.

I fucking hate Die Antwoord, there are a lot of kids I know who are really into them, but they are just simply horrible

but isnt seven ark the producer from die antwoord or was this a internet hiax i mean seven arks music is not that lame i would even consider him one of the best
but yeah they are riding the bandwagon same as aphex playing dubstep

Seven ark is actually an old friend of mine.
As well as his brother Matt who is called Artifact in the Pystrance arena.
Seven ark is great but he makes way more Vex'ed like beats.
It's far more intelligent than Die Antwoord's beats imo.
The backing music is not terrible but it's ruined by Yo-Landi Vi$$er's annoying high pitched wailing and the Ninjas psuedo white trash wannabe attitude.
He is not even remotely like the Ninja irl.

yeah i couldnt find the connection between his music and the antwoord beats either just saw it on several blogs etc
i cant tell how long they want to keep that thing up it was fun when it started but when they did a collabo with diplo it was over for me

Seeing Aphex twin and Die Antwoord on a stage together was shameless.
Aphex playing Kill the Noise and Yolande Vi$$er embarrassing SA as a whole.
