The Official Growl Bass Thread
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
one thing I will say is that I have had very little luck modulating the operators and carriers within fm8.
the best sounds i've got have been through modulating filters and effects

At least give us the gist of what your doing don't just say, "I'm using more secret methods"Instep wrote:OfficialDAPT wrote:I fucking hate when people do thisInstep wrote:and honestly a shitton more than I'd rather keep secret haha
i mean its not like the coke recipe or where they're hiding andy kaufman.. iits just that i don't want to spill out every last detail that I worked really hard to figure out. If some guys are smart with all this then I'll discuss some of my techniques and they can with theres. But I'm not just gonna be like.. hey heres my sound =
new midi track -->insert fm8--->route op. a to op.f-->insert sausage fatterner --> command+G to create instrument rack-->assign color to macro one-->step6 -->step7-->step8-----------------------step29-------------------step67-->step68--------------------Sub bass - create new instance of fm8--------------------compression-------------eq---------------------distortion----------------> locate: "Yes, Oh my God" sample-------------Limit to all hell----=------bow.. monsterous growling sound!

+1 for thatClimax wrote:i wanna hear more about those reverberated delayed dungeon growls...
not really my production style but im really rating those types of tracks at the moment
Been trying to get those sounds for quite a while now, the tune "hydra" in my sig deals with some different growls - if anyone got any question concerning one of the basses in the track I'll try my best to help!

Hope this thread will receive as much love and knowledge as the reese bass or the "help me make that dungeon sound" thread although this thread here is created for every kind of growly basses, no matter if they sound robotic, brosteppish or dungeonish!

Care to explain / post an example of a dungeon sort of growl? I don't know what kind of sound you are talking about there.DJens wrote:+1 for thatClimax wrote:i wanna hear more about those reverberated delayed dungeon growls...

theres a dungeony growl in this wip i made Soundcloud i agree with you though, those reverberated reese growls are incredible!Climax wrote:i wanna hear more about those reverberated delayed dungeon growls...

so this isn't the kind of sound you're going for? (In the drop of course) I could help you with this one, but i guess you're going for a more obvious, saw-based sound right?dubesteppe wrote:theres a dungeony growl in this wip i made Soundcloud i agree with you though, those reverberated reese growls are incredible!Climax wrote:i wanna hear more about those reverberated delayed dungeon growls...

Soundcloud
EDIT: Alright from what i heard so far, those sounds seem like very gentle reeses with little movement and they sound like they have some very subtle, traditional formant filtering on them i guess

Sort of but more like the reese growls in this Soundcloud and this Soundcloud and also some of knowledge's stuff. Knowledge posts on here. maybe he can help usReversed wrote:so this isn't the kind of sound you're going for? Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
OK so i'm making alot of progress with this growl
I'm using a different technique I call head-chopping.. (has to do with eq and compression)
the big problem i'm having righjt now is i'm getting a high-pitched resonating sound along with my bass.. it sound like its somewhere around 10-15khz but it doesn't show up on the analyzer
i tested all the plugs and its none of them (i thought it might be a sharp resonance setting or conflicting cutoff points) but its none of them.. there seems to be some type of inherent hum when you use so many plugins.
cannot notch it out!
BTW,, i got yelled at for not telling my secrets.. but no one seems to be responding to me.. i thought the last growl i uploaded was pretty damn good

In FM8 if you have too much self-feedback that's what happens.Instep wrote:the big problem i'm having righjt now is i'm getting a high-pitched resonating sound along with my bass.. it sound like its somewhere around 10-15khz but it doesn't show up on the analyzer
Also i think we are going the wrong way with FM synthesis here actually, but i really have no idea what else would work since all the standard types of synths i know don't seem to be capable of producing this kind of powerful growl, but neither does FM8.
I know skrillex once upon a time said he uses FM8. But he certainly doesn't use it for everything.

Inspired by this thread to make a gruesome, loud, obnoxious sound...I made this:
Soundcloud
Project file available here, for any Fruit-heads:

TBF, SoundCloud made it sound a whole lot worse...

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
@topic: frequency shifters can do VERY nice things but are best used for resampling, not as a static or automated effect on top of a bassline. when i find time to experiment i'll post something with the steps taken.
@the people who said they used WOW filter, how exactly? i find the formant filter to sound pretty much shit on anything so far, i mostly use WOW for twisty reese basses (2x notch + 10-20% drive with a flanger on top =

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
if you go between U and A on it you can get some decent sounds

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
I swear U>A and O>A are the only decent settings on WOW, I really struggle to get it to give any usuable output.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
are you use the bandreject? because choosing vowel mode by default is bandpass, and i found that to sound like ass compared to the bandreject, as it gives alot more character to your basses@the people who said they used WOW filter, how exactly? i find the formant filter to sound pretty much shit on anything so far, i mostly use WOW for twisty reese basses (2x notch + 10-20% drive with a flanger on top =)
In ableton I find automating or macro-ing it to an instrument rack works wonders with the eq modulation, I wouldn't suggest applying the built in lfo to cut off to it unless you want a fixed repetitive movement to your formant filter.
as for pitch bending, I know it doesn't really matter how far you pitch do your sounds in automation but I always find that keeping in key with your song makes it sound alot more suiting, with that being said, having your synth pitch down either +12/-12 , +5/-5, +7/-7 semitones works well enough to whatever scale you play in and it most certainly give alot more texture and movement to your effects.
I have a quick question about the pitch envelope in fm8,
if you look it, you're able to go up AND down 1 octave if your envelope is set to '50' and I believe '100' is 2 octaves up and down, but I can be mistaken.
I also find that in the parameters of the envelope, you can only go down -1.000 and 1.000, which means you'd have to do a little bit of math here and divide 12 by 10 which is roughly 0.83 so i found that it's slightly more annoying to figure out how low or high your synth is pitching in terms of semitones to your pitch, is there another way of doing this? perhaps the arppegiator feature with transpose and portamento applied?
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
I can't believe everyone is calling me an asshole. I'm not asking for nor do I want people to say "omg your the best" but my bass sound is undeniably in another league from anything made on this forum.
Its not that i'm arrogant either. I jsut know how much work i put into sound design and am not impressed when I hear a distorted square wave with some filtering. I admit that my technique has a lot of rough edges that I need to sort out.. But at the same time you can hear how its very similar to skrillex, koan sound, feed me.. you can hear the wishy, chorusy, suctioness of the modulation. I'm not saying its perfect but I damn sure working my ass off to even comprehend sound design a little. But then all I get is "aw its weak.. etc.."" Its just a lack of respect/
I want to share what I know. but my methods are kinda random now,
-sometimes I run fm8 through a vocoder and get some good sounds by automating the formant knob.
-sometimes I get good results by running literally 3-4 camelphats and 3-4 wow filters in series all assigned to one macro and then tweak the "min/max" parameters until it yields something interesting that isn't resonating like all hell
-sometimes i add chorus phaser and flangers and tweek various parameters in automation until it starts to give the sound a noticeable character
-sometimes I add multiple layers of distortion and even automate the gain or color so the dist works with the ffilters
- sometimes I use like 8 fucking L2's a handful of maxbasses, a dozen eqz, 10 amps, 2 vocoders, countless multiband compressors, and fm8
and none of the stuff i posted had sub bass in them nor were they something i spent more than an hour on

Dude, what people were pointing out is that you make stuff and post it but if people ask how you did it you don't care to explain, which is the WHOLE point of this thread. just post a screenshot of your FX-chain and patch like everyone else would or don't participate in the thread at all.
EDIT: If you can't imagine people do this here, check the reese-bass thread. No one says they want to keep their secrets when someone asks how their stuff works.
/arguing now.
let's get some growls going....
another little thing i found out a while ago: using peak filters to make it sound vowel-ish or formant sort of destroys the sound if you apply too much of it, notches can do the same if used properly and don't destroy the sound as much; however, i didn't have too much luck getting some proper sound out of that either yet.
btw: tristams new tune has some really weird, clean formant synth going on:
