I just think it's a ridiculous amount of money to ask for synth samples that can be obtained for free on websites and forums. People have been posting samples from the same synths for years. The interface is nice, but if you have a good sampler already it makes it less useful.

Agreed, the soundbanks are a bit pricey, and you can do the same "ROMpler stuff" with abletons sampler, or even FLs. I honestly use it 75% percent of the time for drums, the drum kits are fully mapped out across the keys and are all velocity sensitive multi-sampled sounds.

I used Nexus (when I had it illegally) mainly for its plucky sounds and some of the percussion in the drum patches. I don't have it anymore but I'm still going to buy the complete version regardless of what people say.

In the spirit of recovering data...anyone know anything about recovering stuff off a (pretty much) dead laptop? Thing got some nasty virus and won't turn on unless randomly and then it just locks up again if it does turn on. Can't boot to safe mode or any of that jazz. Anything I can do before I toss it for good? Gave up on it ages ago but there are some projects on there I'd cut nuts off to get back

Yes, you can boot from a Linux live cd or usb.

You can also try these other Linux based tools such as:

Trinity Rescue Kit

Ultimate Boot CD

You lost your entire sample library?

So where was the place you remember last having it?

Just pull out the hard drive. It's literally just plugged in underneath you don need to open the laptop. Buy a IDE/sata to USB adapter. Plug that into another comp . And youll have access to all your files.

Yeah you could slave the hard drive to another computer, but that will cost some money for the adapter and you run the risk of infecting the new machine. I'd just go the live linux route, copy any files you need to a flash drive, scan the flash drive with antivirus (there's also some antivirus included in some linux distros now), then after you check your files are okay, format the laptop hard drive, reinstall OS and it's as good as new. A virus wont actually physically damage anything unless you are a nuclear physicist and got sabotaged by the government.

btw I like Knoppix

You guys must be downloading from some sketchy websites. I don't believe in having anti-virus. Just a money scam to me. I've only had Ccleaner & the free version of Malwarebytes for the past 4-5 years and only got a virus once. Well it wasn't a virus, more spam ware.

Typically the worst scanners are the only ones that cost money haha, like Norton. Avira or Avast are free and great.
I've not had an infection in years but better safe than sorry. Have plenty of people on auto-accept who send me a lot of random files.

I downloaded a smiley package once for MSN and it installed some pointless toolbars and Babylon that I couldn't get rid of.

I didn't download anything, plugged a usb drive of my brothers in and there was some dodgy program that imitated folders on the drive. Spread over the entire laptop when I double clicked it and totally fucked my laptop over in the process. I tried to get to the hard drive but its stupidly hard to get at anything (olddd lappy bought off a mate for £20) it managed to spread to another pc iv got but caught that one before it did any damage.

Still don't really understand how it managed to mess the laptop up so bad though. It won't turn on for ages, pressing the power button doesn't do anything and then it will randomly start working again but nothing boots and once it fails to load it goes back to the power button not working for weeks...

Might just smash the fucker on the floor and see if the hard drive springs free that way

My old HP laptops fan stopped working and wouldn't boot when it got too hot. Payed Staples $50 to fix it and problem came back within a month. Just threw the shit away.

idk about infecting the other machine, but i got the adapter from ebay for a $1.50 and it worked flawlessly!

My fan went out, bought one from ebay for 6 bucks and installed it in like 10 mins, still working like a champ after 6 months! that required opening up the laptop though
