Id say go with the iphone. even though it may not have as many features android phones have, it is just much more reliable imo. I had the iphone 3g which worked fine without any problems or slowing down(jailbroken). Then I switched to an android because I was bored of the iphone, and my contract was up. Had my nexus s for maybe 8 months, I woke up one morning and then the power button on the phone just stopped working. Made the phone useless. The phone also froze and lagged alot even though I made sure not to have many apps running in the background.

Oh and if you are looking for a cheaper 4s try buying it refurbrished from your carrier. Best buy sells the refurbrished iphone 4s for 99$

Just found this thread in the search, thought I'd ask a few questions here instead of starting a new thread

Basically I don't know anything about smartphones, only ever had old fashioned mobiles but my current pay as you go phone needs replacing so I'm considering a contract smartphone, possibly an iPhone in the hope that the new model release means I can get a good deal on a 4S.

As well as internet stuff I'm mainly interested in getting one for the music related apps etc - are a lot of them iPhone-only? That's the impression I get, but if not then the extra cost of an iPhone over a Samsung Galaxy for example doesn't seem worth it... or is it worth it for other reasons?

If someone could explain some smartphone stuff to me as if I'm a technologically impaired 80 year old then that'd be great

Are there any viable alternatives to a lengthy contract with a smartphone?

I've had an Iphone 3 on a 24 month with O2 and I fucking hate paying £35 a month when countless adverts are offering cheaper deals.

Failing a shorter contract, are there any cheaper/better options from different providers out there?

I quite like my S3. I don't do much with it so the battery lasts quite a while. The camera seems decent, the face recognition is nice to use.

I think the cheapest deal our there for one is £32 at the moment, so not too different from the £35 you're currently paying.

I like my Nokia N8.

Yeah, I've bought my last couple of phones 2nd hand (look out for people falsely claiming their insurance a few months later and getting it blocked though, best to get from a proper company on Amazon or cash converters or friends). Then a roll-over pay monthly all you can eat data sim from 3 is £15pm.

Got a perfect condition boxed Xperia arc s for £170, same deal new would be at least £30pm on a 24 month pay monthly deal(£360 extra -£170 = saves £190 and not tied into any contract).

Or get one of those sim deals and buy the phone brand new- won't really save much ££ then but at least not tied into a deal for 2 years.

yeah the phone providers have it sown up tight! I saw on the o2 forum (i think) and someone had done the sums if you bought a phone outright and then had a month to month rolling sim versus a 24month contract and the difference then was £9 better off on the rolling sim

this so much. I've had my touch jailbroken forever and it's awesome. There's no way I would buy an iphone without jailbreaking it. Probably getting an SG3 soon though.

I really want an S3.

I had an iPhone 4S but it got stolen, so I got my dad's old Galaxy S (the first one). Besides the obvious difference in performance I gotta say I'm liking Android a lot.

The S3 is cheaper, has better performance and more features. And Android is more than capable as an OS to match iOS.

i like the ability to just drag and drop to transfer files onto my phone, thats the big let down about iphones for me, i love my 4s but i have a blackberry for work and its so easy to get files onto it so just use that for putting tunes onto for listening to in the car

I would go for one of those high end android phones if you are looking for performance.

Also, what kind of amounts of mobile web data are people going through? Is 500mb/month a decent amount? If you run out does it just cut off or do you just get billed for whatever extra you use?
