Could I cut out a fraction of a sound and use it in a sampler to use as synth or w/e?

Even tho these days the only time I manage to find to make tunes is when I'm taking 20 minute shits... I'm in. :6:

Maybe I'll even crank out the whole tune in one of those 20 minute shit-timespans. :corndance:

Time limits? We using the last iteration of the rules format or... ? (And if one of you asks about granular synthesis again I swear to fuck I'll... I'll... Oh, fuck it. :u: )

Just don't use any form of generated tone unless it is from the selected samples.

Considering how many times this has been run, we still get the same questions over and over and over.

Yeah... Which is why I mentioned the granular synthesis. Everybody thinks they're the first person to be clever about hypotheticals.

Can we get a repost here of the standing rules or are you waiting for the contest to start proper?

Not a bad idea;

COMPETITION RULES AND GUIDELINES
  • CREATE A TRACK WITH ONLY THE SAMPLES PROVIDED
  • USE ANY EFFECTS OR SOUND PROCESSING TO YOUR ADVANTAGE (CUT/SLICE/EDIT ETC.) DO NOT BUILD OR MAKE YOUR SOUNDS USING SYNTHS
  • TRACK DURATION MUST BE LESS THAN 5 MINUTES FOR SUBMISSION, TRACKS EXCEEDING THIS TIME LIMIT WILL NOT BE INCLUDED
  • ANY GENRE OR STYLE OF MUSIC IS ACCEPTED
  • DO NOT POST YOUR TRACK BEFORE SUBMISSION OR REVEAL THE IDENTITY OF YOURSELF OR OTHER PRODUCERS
  • WHEN FINISHED, UPLOAD YOUR TRACK, PROVIDE A TITLE, THEN SEND THE TRACK TO WUB VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE WITH THE DOWNLOAD LINK

alphacat wrote:Although the above about granular [re]synthesis made perfect sense when I wrote it, it dawned on me that most all of the basslines we're gonna come up with from that 808 waveform will be - essentially - used in a granular fashion, even if it's fairly limited in implementation for most of us (restricted to a pretty narrow frequency domain more or less.)

And there are no rules against using, say, Alchemy if you own it - which does bigtime granular hoohaa out the ass.

i think that part of the rules should be extended to say:
use of granulization/wavecycle processing & VST effects are allowed as long as no other audio source is added
..or something similar.
