I#m sure i read somewhere that all the "female" vocals on Amon Tobin's ISAM was actually just Tobin himself, he managed to find a way to do it.
So yeah it is possible unless he's lying, which he could be i guess.

You'd be correct in remembering that. All the breathy vocal sounds in Piece of Paper/Lost and Found e.t.c. and the actual vocals in Wooden Toy are Amon's voice. He's a bloke and the vocals cetainly sound female. He's said himself in a TV interview he did a while back talking about ISAM that for the voals he recorded himself and changed the formants so he sounded female.

So yep it's certainly doable. Not sure how he's done it himself. I've heard he uses a really expensive sound fuckupery hardware system with it's own custom software where you can design abstract instruments and give them weird physical properties and what not. The guy's a fucking genius by any measure anyway. Gotta love the Tobin, one of the very few producers that genuinely awe inspires me. Mary Anne Hobbs once quoted that "no one else on the planet is doing what he is with sound".

Yeah, no offense to OP but he's probably not on Tobin's level, i was just saying that because somebody said it's "not possible", just wanted to show that maybe it isn't ;)
He uses Kyma btw. And he's a genius.

Unless your going for a vocoder, robot vocal effect it would be difficult to achieve.

* Sing at a fraction of the tempo, with a girlish timbre (cf. Muse record) + speed up accordingly.... it should sound pretty natural (more respect for the formant than transpose).(*)
* Do female hormones pills for a while. It shouldn't be that expensive and funny as shit.

(*) I heard some rumors like Metallica recorded a few hard guitar solos this way.

Just repitching the vocals in melodyne or in your DAW sampler won't be enough. I feel like you would have to ''impersonate'' the character of a female voice and sing at a higher register...then maybe also repitch. Try watching a bunch of chick flicks and then give it a go!

it's all about re-shaping the formants. tbf logic's pitch-shifter is the easiest to use. now if only it sounded better.

though with that said...

go listen to Danny Byrd's "Shockout." mainly because that tune (really the whole album) just crushes. enjoy the female vox

then watch this:

It can be done with Melodyne. But, which version you require I'm not sure. If you go on youtube you can watch how-to videos on how its done in melodyne.
