I actually own Beats, idgaf what people say... I like them and they suit my needs perfectly: they sound good (specifically in noisy situations such as travel thanks to the noise cancellation), they look half decent and they're very portable. As for the price, without trying to sound like a tnuc, they're not that expensive. Although I don't use them to produce.

I have Sony HD headphones. Can't remember the exact model number though. Extremely flat response that's good producing.

it's not they are "bad" headphones.

but for the PRICE, they can not possible get worse. and for monitoring? they're terrible because of the exaggerated bass response.

it's not they are "bad" headphones.

but for the PRICE, they can not possible get worse. and for monitoring? they're terrible because of the exaggerated bass response.

I mentioned the price really isn't that expensive imo, plus I don't produce with them... I use them for listening to music (mainly whilst travelling), as they were designed for.

I think the OP is looking for headphones that can serve a purpose in making music, and not just listening to it. For that purpose I would not recommend beats.

they cost ~$170... for that i can get some ultrasone pro 550's (which are some of the best headphones around, period).

but like i said, beats aren't bad, but if you can get mediocre (beats) or some of the best around (ultrasone pro)... why would anyone ever choose otherwise?

nothing is expensive when mom & dad are paying for it!

I think the OP is looking for headphones that can serve a purpose in making music, and not just listening to it. For that purpose I would not recommend beats.

Like I said, I don't produce on them and never recommended them - I just chimed into the discussion with what headphones I use tbh.

I explained why I chose them, mainly noise cancelling and portability due to the fact I travel a lot on my job, I specifically mentioned I don't use them to produce nor did I say they were the best - they just happen to suit my needs perfectly.

It's amusing that so many people jump to conclusions on here, I bought them myself (as goes for pretty much everything music/production related in my flat atm), with the money I earn from a proper career... hence why I said they're not expensive to me (which is why in my OP I didn't want to come off sounding like a tnuc)

It's quite interesting that from my one post I seem to be getting shit from a few directions (which tbh I kind of expected considering I own a pair of Beats which is clearly blasphemous ), despite the fact I never advised anyone on buying Beats, nor did I say they were production headphones - I simply stated they suit my needs, which is surely what counts when buying any sort of product?

Anyways on with the thread; the headphones I'd really like to buy are the Audeze LCD-3's - they just look incredible and actually are going by a few accounts.

ultrasone pro headphones haven't been mentioned, and they are what every pro has told me to get when asked (producers, engineers, touring musicians, singers all fucking love ultrasone)

Counter productive, how?
You normally produce in quite environments.
With open back phones you are getting a good expression of the sound stage normally heard with speakers.
Compared to closed back where the sound stage is a lot narrower.
Which means the open backed phones generally relate real world sound better than closed phones.

Yeah as Electric Head says, that's the reason I decided to go for them. They were primarily bought for production purposes and so maintain a good flat response. Until then I hadn't read up on the whole open back headphones concept, but they are designed to better convey a more natural sitation in a real environment.

these are pretty good, but I don't use them as often as I should as I tend to spend most of my time working straight off the monitors. They are open backed, and so are designed to naturally reflect how you would hear two speakers leaking sound from the left speaker to the right ear and the right speaker to the left ear, which you don't get when they are fully closed. The only thing I've had issus with over this though, is that often the strap at the top hurts my head when it's been on for over an hour. it presses down continually and doesn't feel like much at first until it starts to kick in. I paid about £200 for them a few years ago. They do look and sound great though.

AKG, Grado, Audio Technica, are all good bets.

Avoid anything with a celebratory name on it.
