They're powerful, but this one makes me so sad every god damn time

Eight-year-old Christian Golczynski accepts the flag for his father, Marine Staff Sgt. Marc Golczynski, during a memorial service. Marc Golczynski was shot on patrol during his second tour in Iraq (which he had volunteered for) just a few weeks before he was due to return home.
Basically anything to do with death fucks me up

Didn't say it was new, but you should really understand the context of the image before you use words like 'sadder'.

tbh having your dad's corpse flown over the ocean by plane to be buried at your home after he was killed by some guerilla fighters on the other side of the world is such a first world problem in compairson to most other stuff that makes the news.Nevalo wrote:thishasezwei wrote:soldiers die. it's part of their job.

i mean yeah sucks for the boy but his dad should have known the risks. what did he volunteer for anyway when he's got kids?
Re: "The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2012"
That's the point though. The photo is of a child, not of a dead body in uniform. To the kid, he's not a solider. He's Dad. It's not asking you to evaluate the rights and wrongs of war, it's just connecting you to the emotions of a child that's had their Dad taken away from them. Whether that's his Dad's fault, the country's fault, humanity's fault or whatever doesn't matter - how can you not look at that kid and feel sadness?Nevalo wrote:thishasezwei wrote:soldiers die. it's part of their job.

You really find that a hard concept to fathom?!

That's quite... interesting. Live dog getting pampered and being given medical treatment a lot of humans don't have access to for free, kid mourning his dead father.
Live dog sadder.
That's right, yeah?

Re: "The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2012"
I see that kid crying and it makes me hate war more than before.
I feel bad for the kid but not as much as I despise war.
Consider his dad volunteered to go fight in a war that has claimed 1000 of lives.
It's statistically proven that he has a major chance of dieing.
Get what I'm saying?

Re: "The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2012"
I'd say that was about the same as my reaction. It's an absolutely heartbreaking photo because it shows one of the human impacts of the wars which we try so hard to detach ourselves from. We want to say that people involved in the war brought it on themselves - the Dad knew the risks, so I can't feel bad for his life being cut short, but the kid didn't know the risks and wasn't even consulted. He just woke up one day to find out he didn't have a Dad anymore. That's war.Electric_Head wrote:I see that kid crying and it makes me hate war more than before.

Either way, the photo of the child is sadder than a photo of an animal that's seemingly got better healthcare options than most Americans.

Re: "The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2012"
well thats for sure
its just that theres so many kids losing their parents who did NOT volunteer in any way since the war came to them and that's made the whole crying over western soldiers falling in the middle east seem a bit... first world problem-y for me.

Re: "The 45 Most Powerful Images of 2012"
Human sadness is human sadness. It's not the kid's fault he was born on the side that's not allowed any sympathy.
