big up beckham

in my opinion it seems like he's doing it in protest. i like to look at things in percentages... that's like if you have $200, and you give someone $3. still a good look though.

on the tax thing: i work for one of the largest corporations in the world, and we get a "letter from the chairman" each january that recaps the previous calendar year. lately they've been throwing in some political BS in company correspondence about taxes and how high taxes are going to hurt the company, and the subtext is make sure you vote for the guys who don't want to tax us more. basically a "well when the new fiscal year begins and we lay off the peons, make sure you blame obama!" it really is disgusting.

dont see why people are going mad at him for this...
giving that amount of money to charity should be viewed as good no matter the context

and for you stnuc complaining that he didnt give to an english charity, why the fuck does it matter. charity is charity, why does geographical location have anything to do with it.

Has it been said yet that the 75% tax only applied after the first 1 million you make.
Example
Earn exactly 1,000,000.
Tax is 25% you take home Total: 750k.
Earn 1,500,000.
You pay 25% tax on your 1,000,000 and you pay 75% tax on your 500k as its above the 1mil mark.
Take Home Total. 1,125,000.

I guess he would rather give all that money to charity and get under the bar then go over it and take home a fraction of whats gone in. Good PR really and to be honest a better looking choice in the eyes of most of the world media as nobody likes the tax man

because that's a gross oversimplification

first of all, in your example the difference in tax rates would only be 3%

there's so many reasons for a progressive tax I don't even know where to start.

why not? revenue for the government has to come from somewhere, and the fact of the matter is that the rich are more capable of providing it than the lower and middle class.

then there's the fact that the rich have benefitted more from "the system" and therefore some of their gains from said system should be used to help secure the same opportunities for others. that's not to deny any personal hard work that went into their success, but it is just as foolish to deny that the socioeconomic environment they were in had nothing to do with their success.

also when you're talking about high tax rates on the super super rich (millionaires and above), a high tax rate encourages them to reinvest a lot of their money, rather than just losing it to said high tax rate. this goes back into the economy, benefiting everyone. when the base of the country, the lower and middle class, do well, everyone does better.

i feel like for the most part, it is usually ppls own fault if theyre poor

too much blaming other people like the "system"

if everyone relied on themselves then wouldnt this solve the problem as well?

This is complete bullshit.

Also, a flat tax is retarded because 15% of a poor person's income is a lot more valuable to them than 15% of a rich person's.

this sentiment is popular, especially in the US, but it's incorrect. there's so many people who work hard all their lives, probably harder than a lot of super rich people, and never end up with what they really deserve. socio-economic mobility (basically a measure of if someone "doing everything right" gets the upward increase in income and standard of living they deserve) has declined greatly since the 1980s... that year seems familiar...

good quote from steinbeck:
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”
