It's typically thought by younger people because of the way the media portray DJs as people who make music, particularly because Hip-Hop videos put DJs into the publics attention and in that genre there actually once was a time when the DJ created the beats on the spot by manipulating existing songs.
that and a lot of people having no idea, to this day, how electronic music is made. DJs are the figurehead/public image for electronic music. Synths, Mac's and mixing boards aren't as aesthetically pleasing or as easy to put into a Coca-Cola advert.

My best friend, a complete metalhead, is one of those people that thinks you can simply go into FL Studio, write in one note, open up Massive, select a random wavetable like duckorgan, throw on an LFO, and *BAM*, "dubstep". I told him to come over one day and try to make a simple intro, and he immediately said no. This is sort off topic of the DJ side, but more of people think just because Skrillex used/uses a TriggerFinger, anyone can make music, when all the TriggerFinger does is play the sequences.

yeah totally
many a times i've played at a house party or somewhere else where the audience can get close to the DJ and had people being positively puzzled about what exactly i am doing. i mean how hard can it be to understand? do they not know what a record player is? a common question was: "so, what are you exactly doing here? are you making the music that comes out?". another example was when this dude had listened to my mix and he referred it to as a "song". one (1) song that was made by me

that just takes the cake!
i've only been into deejaying, producing and electronic music in general for a few years but even before that i still knew that djs are just playing music...

It's all about a producer/DJ who can balance a set between:-
1.Their own tracks that are released (The songs that made you like that producer in the first place, also good to promote released material)
2.Their own dubs (These are what differentiate this DJ from anybody else playing the same old tracks that anyone can get ahold of)
3.Other producers tracks that are released (It's always nice to hear other popular tracks of the moment and support the rest of the scene)
4.Other producers dubs (Again something else that other guys might not have.)
I used to play entirely number 3 (unconfident of my own material and other producers dubs that weren't mixed/mastered to the same standard as the popular tracks) However since I have started to incorporate the other 3 into my sets I have felt my skill level of both a DJ and producer increase a massive amount. Mainly because hearing songs played that are less than perfect just forces my brain into analysis mode figuring out how to improve things. When you mix music that is too perfect it is hard/nearly impossible to do this as the track is already complete.

People always ask what I do in my spare time.
When I say I produce they ask 'oh so you mix songs?'
It's a pain in the ass to always explain it.

impossible to do while playing ur own tunes
jesus christ have you never been to see a band play a live gig? Is your attention span that short that you can't handle one style for the duration of a set? Have you never listened to an album?
Is this a product of dance/electronic music tending to be more singles-based as opposed to many other genres where the album is the main format ?
It's a fine line in electronic music between "playing live" and just triggering loops/song sections but if you go to see someone
perform music you'll see a slightly different show every time. Maybe he didn't let the delay drag on as much, maybe the organ solo went on a few more bars, maybe the drugs kicked in and they went on an extended jam of the Thomas the Tank Engine theme tune... That's what "live" is and while it may be less common in electronic music, it's certainly not impossible and it's absolutely more entertaining to watch.

Who cares who produced the tunes if the set sounds good?
^rayman, I don't mind going off topic if we get some good, civilized discussion going.

ppl like a joker who makes a wide variety of tunes can do a mix of theyre own tunes
as could skream
or blah blah blah
BUT when some1 like omar-s who only makes gritty deep house or shlohmo (who i saw live & was very meh) who plays only houstron dj screw bullshit
that is unnacceptable
i was generalizing that most "djs" that are actualy "producers" do the latter (omar s & shlohmo) so i said its bad when djs do this
if they are actually stand alone regardlesss of prodcutin name a serious dj that can put dow a good mix
then its completely different story
so i think we agree abou this

before i went deep into the knowledge of dj and producing i thought that the dj is creating the noise swooshes and the crashes when the songs drop, because he was always turning knobs. i actually thought the mixer has the ability to create those sounds.
also in many tv clips i see the singer... and the producer in the background wjth 2 cdj, turning knobs and shit but his actions don't relate to what is going on in the song. not saying that the players are 90% of the times the players are turned off but you don't see that.
so this is also adding into people's mind that the guy is creating the music with those cdjs

Are DJs even DJs these days?
A "proper" DJ would be scratching, cutting, crabbing and all that stuff.
