This is a good idea for loads of reasons:
1> You give out your Youtube link / addy and people listen to your tunes online. Then on each video you can provide your sales pitch and links to your soundcloud / website / agent etc.
Your sales pitch might read something like this:
If you love these sounds, hire me to play at your party.
Contact me at
blahblahblah@partydj.com or visit my website and use the booking form at partydj.com/bookings.
2> People can share your link more easily when they're already on the page. Build a simple wordpress site (for free) and add a Facebook 'Like' button plugin so your name gets spread.
3> You can add visuals from your parties, video's, photo's, flyers, sexy women on the beach, sunsets etc etc (and all the usual Youtube music video jazz lol). This helps engage people with your brand + hype people up to attend your gigs. Check out videos of
Creamfields or
Dance Valley for examples.
4> You then have a single place where people can check back regularly for your latest mix meaning you only need to promote one link on you business card. (Don't have a card? Get busy in MS Word, buy some quality print paper and print 'em yourself. Just be careful to cut them neatly.)
5> With people visiting your Youtube channel / Soundcloud / website, you can post 'previews' mixes of upcoming gigs with interviews of the venue owners, vox pops of revellers from previous parties, vox pops of punters getting hyped for the upcoming party etc etc.

Regarding theft issues:
1> If you keep making new refixes, you'll remain ahead of the pack. It's up to you to work on your craft and improve your art. Post your older mixes if you must, with a watermark and never playing the full tunes (as mentioned earlier in this thread).
2> If you're bringing in the punters, your 'brand name' isn't 'copyable', even if your competing DJ's are better DJ's technically or play the same tunes.
3> If you're getting bookings now, you're already the 'go to' DJ. People don't like change meaning that once they are familiar with how you work with them, they'll be keen simply to keep their life simple and work with who they know instead of risking everything and booking unknowns who could be shit.
The bottom line is this.
Pull in the punters and you'll keep getting bookings. Give away too much for free and people will have less reason to pay to hear you play live.

It's fucking scary b2b funny/sad
im doing a music degree and it's like the real life version
maybe the heads are in the wrong tho... and music actually is about brick walling, top 10 remixes and making hand gestures while you press play on your virtual dj to people in fake Armani

edit: but really, the pop artists you've re-fixed were probably even more concerned about theft than you are, and look what happened.
Hows that different than just bouncing out the projects in 192kbps? And as far as the pop artist being concerned,
well im not making profit out of it, i just dont want other djs to have them
since those remixes plus my originals have been landing me gigs recently
Surely if they're landing you gigs then you are profiting from it.

Conundrum.
By purchasing a track that makes you able to play it, legally, yeah?
How about remixing it then playing it out? Do you get creative license when you buy it for the right to play it?
Letting other people download illegally is obviously not allowed, legally.
