Its a low wage when the cost of living is as high as it is though. Minimum wage here is $10/h, but how helpful is that when inflation is as high as it is? It wasn't that long ago that I can remember working for $5.35 either...

Not saying those wages aren't fucked up tho, thats pretty much $2 an hour.

Real shit dude. But it sucks when you're making 15 bucks an hour and still can't make ends meet. It basically comes down to having to move out of the city that you're living in to a cheaper city that is still not that much cheaper way out in bum fuck Egypt. Then the commute to your job is hours away in which the gas adds up to the same amount that made it unaffordable to live in the city you just moved from. It's a God awful dilemma.

I don't know what the limitations are in the UK but in the US I think it's more of the middle class that's suffering. I almost would in the extreme poor or wealthy demographic. All of our programs for housing assistance have maximum and minimum restrictions in terms of annual salary. Granted there's usually a waiting list for subsidized housing but they still have a chance to get ahead. Which in some cases I think people that are living with lower incomes take advantage of the system for too long. This ultimately stops the whole progression of our economy. While, of coarse the rich don't have to worry about any of it. The middle class basically live on a minimum wage while making decent salaries and having nothing to show for it.

You can get by in the UK with working tax credits, housing benefit etc, but now everyone's asking "Why the hell are we paying our taxes just to subsidise companies paying their workers fuck all while their executives make a killing?". The Labour party could well campaign on the 'living wage' issue (roughly 7.50 pounds an hour) to ensure people don't have to subsidise full-time workers.

To be honest with you companies saying "We won't do business in places with high wages because we can't make money" are chatting shit because there's more money for the taking when people at the bottom spend. If America raises it's minimum wage that would actually STIMULATE the economy because there'd be actual demand for stuff.
