Everything has problems at some point.
Going to live on another planet with generated oxygen seems to pose more problems than anything.

Thread is about BIG FUCKIN' UPS to workers willing to risk what little they have
to protest the shit that rich fuckers lay upon them.
Hope they had a great, inspiring, successful day today.

Hugh, this is a great article - very well stated, and also gets points for tying in Jaron Lanier's ideas about tech and jobs (speaking of which
here's a crosslink to another post I did with a great read on that topic as well.)

you fucked up if you're working at Subway trying to make ends meet. take responsibility for that. it's not Subways fault.
these guys were on npr today asking to be paid $15/hr. get the fuck out.
another guy said he'd been working at a burger king for like 6 years and only got a .15 raise that whole time. that sucks. seriously.
but why the fuck did you not look elsewhere for work?
there was this bunch of idiots that got fired from a local independent liquor store for being late, lazy, etc.
they started picketing and tried to sue the business to get their jobs back, and were demanding $18/hr or something ridiculous.
what planet do these people live on?
if you don't have skills, you're not going to make a very good living. and you probably shouldn't expect to.

Its a low wage when the cost of living is as high as it is though. Minimum wage here is $10/h, but how helpful is that when inflation is as high as it is? It wasn't that long ago that I can remember working for $5.35 either...
Not saying those wages aren't fucked up tho, thats pretty much $2 an hour.

Well said.

Real shit dude. But it sucks when you're making 15 bucks an hour and still can't make ends meet. It basically comes down to having to move out of the city that you're living in to a cheaper city that is still not that much cheaper way out in bum fuck Egypt. Then the commute to your job is hours away in which the gas adds up to the same amount that made it unaffordable to live in the city you just moved from. It's a God awful dilemma.

You can get by in the UK with working tax credits, housing benefit etc, but now everyone's asking "Why the hell are we paying our taxes just to subsidise companies paying their workers fuck all while their executives make a killing?". The Labour party could well campaign on the 'living wage' issue (roughly 7.50 pounds an hour) to ensure people don't have to subsidise full-time workers.
To be honest with you companies saying "We won't do business in places with high wages because we can't make money" are chatting shit because there's more money for the taking when people at the bottom spend. If America raises it's minimum wage that would actually STIMULATE the economy because there'd be actual demand for stuff.

I make around €7,50 an hour as well, but I don't have to support any children / pay high rent or whatever.
Feel for these people.

I don't know what the limitations are in the UK but in the US I think it's more of the middle class that's suffering. I almost would in the extreme poor or wealthy demographic. All of our programs for housing assistance have maximum and minimum restrictions in terms of annual salary. Granted there's usually a waiting list for subsidized housing but they still have a chance to get ahead. Which in some cases I think people that are living with lower incomes take advantage of the system for too long. This ultimately stops the whole progression of our economy. While, of coarse the rich don't have to worry about any of it. The middle class basically live on a minimum wage while making decent salaries and having nothing to show for it.

What about the people that have degrees and qualifications, yet settle for menial jobs because of the lack of work??
It's not the 1960's anymore where we can just whistle down the road and get a job. What fucking planet do you live on bro??? Why should people have to work for peanuts while the corporate bosses make millions?? A minimum wage is supposed to be the MINIMUM that a person can live off, sadly people can't do this.
It's people like you that make this world a shit place imo.
If you were English you would definitely vote tory, you swine.

Is it unreasonable to ask for a decent wage so you can actually live and breath? Don't have to worry all the time etc
Of course you're not going to make a very good living but you should be able to expect to make a living.
There can be numberous reasons as to why you're stuck to such a shitjob. Is it not subways fault they're making millions yet all their staff seems to be underpayed? Of course not because that's how the world runs right...
