I really like For Her Gun from your SC as well, thats a nice way to string samples together. That latest ambient bit is cool, might have to illegally rip that and sample it on my next beat HUEHEU. that reminds me though, you much of a crate-digger? I'm not tbh, mainly cos theres fuck all places to cratedig around here except for an oxfam with about 20 records lol

nevalo those are some very nice chords, drums couldve been a bit better though imo. lol, i get a bit obsessive over drums, is the main reason why I hate a lot of my own tunes

Well listen to some of my tunes up there, and they are pretty fucking confused. hehe. But no, it really isn't so confusing at all. Just like get some drum sounds together, transfer them via card to the sp, on the sp sample vinyl (to answer your later question, oxfam with 20 rekerds is perfect btw), play a synth into the sp, either hardware like a little microkorg, or virtual like massive. Make that beat in the sp. Like do several kind of performance of it while recording into the computer. Then just edit the shit out of it back in the computer. And maybe bring parts, loops back out into the sp! It's just a process.

Honestly, if you are into beats, any of those sp 303 or 404's is the shit. They are relatively cheap, and have THE sound. I was just saying in another thread that the sp is my fav piece of gear... after like 20 years of making music.

I've only used the 404sx, and it is the cleanest of the bunch, and I think it is a dirty fucking dog. But on the other side of that, it is the easiest to us with sd cards and whatnot.

Haha, yeah trippin right. No, I just us soundcloud to get songs off my hd, get them somewhere external to myself. Even if they are private. Just digging in around there to clean out some space, and deprivatized a few 3 year old tracks.

I do dig a bit. A few people have just given me their collections. No one wants vinyl, heavy, dirty, smelly. I had a hectic move like 10 years ago and left like 1k vinyl on a street corner. Just couldn't move it...

But those oxfam (assuming like the salvation army/good will here) type joints are PERFECT. Just get random ass stuff. Swear to god was buying records in a good will and there were footprints across the vinyl. Like someone took all the records out of the sleeves and walked around on em. That is what we call flava. Swear, that is the fun of it, just finding shit in the music, not even necessarily phrases or anything, just shit. Just bits of sound.

the thing that's putting me off the SP is that it does look a bit... fidgety, for lack of a better word. It looks like it might not be straightforward when it comes to working with some software. What do you think? I mean if you look at something like Maschine or an MPD the workflow seems smooth but the problem there is you dont get the same sound as an SP. So much dilemma yo

I agree with you on what you say about finding bits of sound though, that is what makes it fun. I used to look through stuff for proper phrases to sample but it always came out sounding quite bland when I did that, way more fun to cut out just the bits you want and mess around with them. More of a challenge to do it that way too

The sp is figidty. In fact, there is a lot that is wrong with it. But that is the point. Those limitations require innovation, and that is where the magic happens. The mistakes, errors that must be compensated for. Like, oh this artist is so fresh, how'd they think to cut this element right here and drop a 16th of organ, but then once you're on the box, your timing is jacked, and your looplength is off, leaving a gap, so it cut's the sound, and so to fill the gap, you drop in a bit of organ. You weren't innovative, you had bad timing, and it sounds dope as a result. If it was in your daw or maschine for that matter, you'd have a perfect looplength, and so this issue would have never have arisen, and never would you have done something totally unexpected. Git me. And another thing! A used sp isn't that much, but you'll probably be able to sell it around what you bought it for if you don't like it or need the cash. The same cannot be said of software, or even of hardware controllers for software, like maschine. I bought the mk1 and took a beating on the price, freaking apc too.

neways, full on sp salesman mode. Just ponder on Wabi-sabi for a bit. I think you'll understand!

Ahh yeah I definitely see what you mean man. When you hear stuff from someone like Samiyam that's one of the things that pop out, how it's not an obviously quantized straightforward loop. That's made it a lot more tempting actually, I might start checking some prices for that man!

Big fan too, but like Dibiase's boiler room better. On the beat spectrum leaning towards the classic hip hop but still fresh. Just stronger groove, bigger beat. Suiting my tastes right now. But I kinda like moving between the space and mad cap vibe of ras and boom bap of dibiase. That's what I struggle with in terms of my own productions. How to stay the same while changing. The stasis of the beat, the progression of the mind. Isis the static mother beat, Ra the dynamic adventurer seeking progression in melody.

@noways: 1983's definitely his most beats-y album so I decided to share that one, got some nicely raw sounds. Los Angeles is probably my favourite flylo album, that one's a bit more smooth and progressive

hah, the exact dilemma I face all the time. ends up with a lot of my beats being quite short because I prefer simple loops to insanely progressive epics, but a loop can only go for so long before it gets boring

Skerrick, I like the atmosphere on that one man, would be cool to see you do some more varied things with the vocals and drums around something like that

See, I think that is the challenge. Like the beat needs to go somewhere. I've got well over 200 beats on my HD, and I listen to them and every single one DIES when I try to push it to evolve. I make a mistake, and lose the vibe, and then it ends up in limbo with all the other wrecks.

But that, for me at least, is the rub. Learn how to progress. And really it is not so much man, we're talking about just building a chorus you know, just like ONE other section. Once you have that, you're pretty much there...

For me, for a long time, I was good to just build a beat, like one A section, and then move on to the next beat. I'm trying now to build progression, evolution.

I don't know what changed. Something inside of me changed. I think I got a moral hardon or something.
