Part of the reason why things like getting high are seen as so cool is just because of
how society sees it as well; kids hear this explicit almost fantasy-like life of a supposedly irresponsible rebel and they think its cool as fuck. Its ironic that theyre only conforming even more when they do this
So plz legalize make it uncool

So music is to blame, but computer games aren't and movies aren't? Are Rockstar creating prostitute killers and car-jackers too?
Fuck off. Art reflects society, it doesn't create society. Young black men in America are more likely to be involved in violent crime because decades of government policy and city design left massive effectively-segregated populations in areas where there were never going to be any jobs. 50 years on from MLK, most blacks in America still live in "Black Areas"... you'll never have equality in society if you don't plan society around equality.
Music will always reflect society - if it sounds violent and sex-obsessed, it's probably because certain sections of society are violent and sex-obsessed. Lyrics reflecting what you see in the street are just as "conscious" as rapping about what you read in a Maya Angelou book.
This is just yet another thing for certain hiphop fans to feel superior about. You're not superior, you're an elitist dick.

yeah thats why I wouldnt completely agree with banning this sort of music, it exists for good reason

its all cool except the violence imo
big ups drugs and hoes
its pretty obvious why kids like it, especially middle class white kids even more so than young black men. its so far from their mundane daily routine, there probably never gonna lead half as an exiting life as the made up lyrics of ignorant hip hop lol
+ you just gotta except the truth - fucking hoes and taking narcotics is alot more fun than doing homework and eating dinner with your parents. theres no marketing or brainwashing lol thats just the truth. And it sells.
take your tin hats elsewhere imo lads

surely thats whats implied by the article though, that ideally that sort of music shouldnt be played?

Young Chop is a great producer though. I often wonder why more producers with his skill don't do a Madlib and make their own albums instead of just serving as the "beat man" for other, often inferior artists.

BTW, Harkat, Brixton has gentrified massively over the last ten years, but Hootenannies is about the least Brixton venue in Brixton. Awful tourist trap of a place.

Edit: this is the same retarded reasoning that makes people blame real life violence on video games
This response is way below your your standard.
The OP literally says that rappers are racist:
black people are having racist and harmful imagery and messages delivered to us through the radio.
Who's making this music? Clear Channel isn't. The imagery and messages are created by black people.
-He goes specifically after Clear Channel rather than entire music industry. It's 2013, radio is the least relevant it's ever been and artists don't get play on there until AFTER they already have a following. To take Chief Keef for an example: he was a cult hit after 3Hunna and Don't Like dropped, but didn't get airplay until Interscope signed him. By that point, he was already known by everyone in Chicago, but that doesn't follows the OP's message of "evil white radio stations killing our communities"
-he's implying that if people listened to Pandora or "other music from our cell phones" it wouldn't have the same lyrical content. Obviously bullshit for the same reasons as above
But I explained that “if a corporation tells you to talk about b*tches, hoes and selling drugs in order to sell more records, that’s not free speech. That’s controlled, corporate speech designed to make a profit. You’re not a legitimate artist; you’re a rich man’s negro puppet.”
^That shit never happened. Gangsta rap wasn't created by corporations, they just discovered it could sell to white people. What really happens is that people talk about bitches, hoes, and selling drugs THEN a corporation offers to pay them for it. But again, that doesn't follow his "evil white radio station" narrative.
-He even acknowledges the problem of the prison industrial complex and how it's destroying black communities, but then chooses to ignore it and go after rappers instead.
We see manifestations of these messages all throughout our communities, since marketing works, whether you’re selling fashion or a lifestyle.
Who says they're selling a lifestyle? They're selling music that talks about a lifestyle. There's no reason for them to actually promote a destructive lifestyle because dead people and imprisoned people don't buy music.
At the end of the day no one actually goes out and commits a crime they wouldn't otherwise commit because they heard a 2Chainz song on the radio. The idea is simply ludicrous.

Yeah i laughed at that, Brixton is actually pretty nice. The only people you have to worry about are the cranks that lurk outside Mc Donalds in the early hours of the morning trying to do over the pissed people staggering out of The Dogstar

^ didn't you read any of the links for interviews posted? 90s rappers got told to make stuff about violence, hoes and illegal drugs. They're promoting a lifestyle by having so much media attention on them being rich doing that shit.
Op is questioning why there isn't more positive material being played.

Wasn't the biggest breakthrough rapper this year Kendrick Lamar whose major smash hit was complaining about social pressure to drink? Kendrick's from Compton, but almost all his music carries an overt message or subtext warning kids away from joining gangs or following the crowd into drink and drugs... he's hardly N.W.A 2.0 with records like Keisha's Song, The Art of Peer Pressure and Kush & Corinthians. He is incredibly popular and co-signed by just about every radio station going.

No one posted anything that said that. Even the insane conspiracy theories like the "secret meeting" don't even say that, they just talk about who gets signed.

Was Johnny Cash part of a conspiracy to turn poor white folk into cocaine snorting lady-killers?
Or even sober lady-killers?
Or was he just writing sensationalist songs because sensationalism has always been entertaining?
