got bored of web design so did this as an example::

the images below are (basically) the drum pattern from this tune ^^^^^^

as u can see the main rhythm is pretty simple alternating between a "long" open* hat and a shorter hat, then youve got the tiny mini hats which add the swing, some of those are off the grid to give it that live shuffley feel, and inbetween those are little random shaker thingies (dno if i got those right or not but theyre definitely there)

this is how my wack five minute version sounds: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bzioygo4qwd5l ... 20hats.mp3

absolute crap compared to the horsepower version, but u get the idea. im sure there was a thread somewhere about getting that garage skippyshuffley hi hat effect. skip & swing masterclass or something, theres some handy tips on there, like compressing all ur hi hats together n stuff.

* quote marks cos even the open hats are fairly short

ps soz i dont have ableton but the fl sampler is fairly easy to understand imo

wow, dude! thanks for that. pretty helpful. How did you manage to work out the hi hat pattern of the original? Right now, i am considering trying to emulate hi hat patterns from songs but i don't know how to do so in ableton. I have checked out a bit of that warp thing but i don't get where i can manage to slow it down or something so i can emulate. I need to start somewhere and everyone;s advice has been so helpful but i just can't seem to get mine to flow or just decent enough.

Argh, i give up

A ride cymbol on the 2 and 4, randomised velocity and a whitenoise layer. This video also used chorus and autopan.

To me usually hihat patterns are the easiest parts to make dunno why...

One thing is velocity of the hits, play with it and youll notice a big difference

I usually start with 4x4 pattern and then i start to create the pattern depending about the beat/vibe i wanna get like just a simple 4x4 pattern or faster, or something like between the kick and snare some fast hihats etc.
Or you can just make something like 4x4 pattern and add another hit right after the 2 and 4 hit but make it quieter (is that even a word?) so it gives some groove. Then add some open hats maybe, make the open hat to stop playing when the closed one hits so it sounds more like the drummer opened the hihat inbetween the hits etc...

Hope someone will understand this. its 5.40am here and im fucking drunk....

again. :u:

wow, dude for someone who was drunk, you type perfectly and still manage to talk sense. I am absolutely crap at typing when drunk. However, i do make quite good cw pieces when drunk haha. I just tried out what you mentioned earlier and it worked. I think with me, it's just that usually i start with the melody and then drums so this is the first time that i have started with the drums. So even wehn i was making the basic kick patterns, it still sounded a bit odd to me (even though, it was the same kick pattern as the projects i have did when i started the melody, first). Not sure if i am making any sense and i am not even drunk haha.
