Great interview in the OP wub
Refreshing to see someone producing on almost exactly the same setup i have going (swap FL for Ableton), just in his front room too
Too right about the analogue gear as well, too much shit is put out that is heralded simply because it was 'made entirely on analogue' or is 'raw' whilst it is really average. Give me 3 osc any day.

I don't even think it's that...whatever you use, just know how to get the best out of it and keep it simple. I'm no Ableton head, but as far as I could tell in that video all that was used was Audacity, Simpler and some EQ?Johoosh wrote:Great interview in the OP wub![]()

Agreeing. Whatever it is that you use, know it blindfolded. Make the thing become invisible. You could have a mansion with every room a modular, and if you know it all, you're going to coherently manifest your vision through all that gear and it is going to be amazing. You have audacity and a connection to youtube, same thing.
With that said, a good eq, comp, and limiter help (soft or otherwise).

Finally got to listen to this. Informative.wub wrote:
Will anyone join me in a slight nerd out? I'm faded and can barely see the screen. How is he working with this audio? It looked like he was working with it inside of a sampler, but I didn't see him writing or editing midi notes. Was he just working with it as audio in the arrange page?
Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
As far as I took it to understand;

- Records in via Audacity (yay, Audacity
) - Ableton Simpler
- Notes clicked in rather than 'recorded' via MIDI, though I imagine the shortcut keys were activating some sort of groove template giving how the rhythm changes
- Adjusting the start/end point of the sample via Simpler to get the desired effect

Kowacevic owes you a raise.
Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
And you can replicate this workflow in fl. Surely.
Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
Surely, yes. But the Ableton idea as an extra machine would add nicely to my portable studio ideas.
And is there a fast & dirty way of getting groove templates up in FL to add shuffle?

Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
Hmmm, why couldn't fl be portable?
Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
No reason especially, just with Ableton we then have the possibility of incorporating into a live show, whereas the live test stuff I've seen about FL hasn't been all that inspiring. And another string to the bow, bonus.nowaysj wrote:Hmmm, why couldn't fl be portable?
Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
Yes, if I understand your question. I mean, was he warping audio to some type of template? Or applying a groove template to midi? I believe I saw a demo of like warping audio in 11 in maybe NewTone. So fogged out. Better input later. But defo super easy to apply midi groove templates.wub wrote:And is there a fast & dirty way of getting groove templates up in FL to add shuffle?
To change the groove of audio though, I just edit it in the playlist, just as a multitrack audio editor. If I want to move like a hat hit, i'll just cut the fucker, slide it, and then if done, group those chunks, and copy paste as they loop.
We're quick posting ourselves

And see, I get on this train of thought and start watching videos like this;
And now I'm pricing up Ableton 9 solutions

Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
Can audio to midi in fl. They had it first, in fact. But can't watch that vid now
too late. Don't know if they're doing anything special with the functionality, what I'd love to see is like live looping, as audio was going to midi, and then getting fucked with there live in the loop.
I know the live performance is important to you. It is to me actually. But everytime I try to set it up, it is too monumental with barriers that require max for live, and I just don't have the hours are moral strength to do it. Sold my apc40 which was a really nice bit of kit. But in terms of composition, just working with audio in fl's playlist is dope. Like a freer, sketchier environment than the old venerable cool edit pro.

Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
That reminds me, I have to get my old laptop + Cool Edit Pro + SP404 setup at some point. Have to chase the missus to transfer everything she wants off her old Fuji onto her Mac so I can get on that. So many projects, so little time. Wait. Time is something I have so much more of now. And space, Hopefully the space I have to create my mad scientist lab will expand exponentially in the next few months.

Awesome video though, very inspiring what he does with what is essentially 'old' kit. This video is the main reason I have an SP-404 next to me right now
Re: [Interview] FourTet - Breaking Out Of The Cycle
I'm pretty new to Burial and only just properly discovered/got into his stuff. I have literally listened to his music everyday for the last two months. Is Burial this guy on the left or is he still unkown?
