Re: THE REVOLUTION NEEDS YOU (amessagefromRusselBrand)
For me it's just the irony of him being part of the economic elite yet he advocates for their removal. Most of his ideas seem to call for reform not revolution. Genevieve sums it up quite well.
Re: THE REVOLUTION NEEDS YOU (amessagefromRusselBrand)
I don't think he's making people more politically aware. I think he's becoming the face of the angry politically unaware. He's not saying anything new, just what most of gen Y has been saying since the '90s and he's expressed some rather terribe solutions in recent times.
Like I said in the thread about the lack of political activism, people aren't ready for revolution. Their heads are stuck in the old paradigm, the same paradigm that's been proven to be destructive anyway. "We have a system of government that services the elite! What we need is the exact same system, except, and if we really try this time, it will serve the people'. It's naive. It only speaks to the heart but not the mind. And that's another thing, I don't think it's wise to promote someone who only speaks from and to the heart. It's a way to reach people, but without an intellectually sound foundation and making people truly understand what they're fighting against, you will only get more mobs of people like the ones Peter Schiff interviewed at occupy wallstreet.

Yeah it's just false optimism, nice to think things can be different with minimal effort and discomfort, in reality that's not true.

Re: THE REVOLUTION NEEDS YOU (amessagefromRusselBrand)
Come to think of it, I don't even think that 'revolution' is a good thing. There have been COUNTLESS OF REVOLUTIONS all through-out history, and they've only lead to temporary successes. Ask the Cubans, Russians, even Americans what a revolution did innitially and where they are now. People don't learn and change from 5 - 10 years of fighting a singular goal. I think it even stunts the intellectuall development of our species, since the majority of all revolutions have been incredibly bloody. I don't think war is beneficial to our long term success.
I think we need to empower people intellectually and teach them how to work the current system as well as they can and transfer that knowledge to later generations. Religion isn't dying out due to a revolution, it is because people started to think and information has been becoming increasingly more available to them . It's a slow and steady, that is ramping up as society progresses, but we're seeing the effects all around us. This same occurrence can apply to other destuctive facets of society as well

On one hand, yeah. He's frustrating because he does understand some of these issues and he's clearly intelligent but gets carried away trying to look/sound impressive and doesn't really offer much in the way of a solution. He does a good job to draw the attention of people (who might otherwise not care) to some important ideas but now he has this platform it seems like he should be able to do more.wub wrote:I agree with this point.nitz wrote:why all the hate, at least he's trying to do something about the broken system indeed, whether you like him or not, the two examples he's cited are correct.
He's using his position to make people more socially and politically aware. I don't consider this to be a bad thing.
I haven't watched this new video though to be honest, hopefully it's not just him stating over and over that drug/substance addiction is a disease.

only difference between him and "i need feminism" whiteboard-carrying campus hippies and other "socio-politically conscious" betas is the fact that people actually pay attention to his spasms via being famous
also having good intentions means jack shit, stop giving him credit
and i can't speak for other countries, but looking at mine (and everyone's protesting here for 2 years now against the rulling class bla bla) i don't even want change tbh. last dude like this who candidated in the last presidential elections threatened to set himself on fucking fire if he didn't win. why would i even consider you a legitimate option?! like bro you just proved in one statement that you're mentally unstable, naive, impulsive and willing to go to extreme lenghts if things don't go your way. at least with the usual guys i know things would stay more or less the same.

Student revolutions in Germany in the 60's were pretty sound and basicly formed the green movement in Germany. Imagine labour but functioning on the basis of ideals.
Same goes for the one in France with guillotines.

Couldn't it just be that they are waiting and would be ready for an alternative if they were presented one?
Good point in the end of this very convoluted claim. But in what ways do see you people getting stuck?people aren't ready for revolution. Hes a clueless tnuc banging on about stuff he knows fuck all about, that could have something to do with it.nitz wrote:why all the hate, at least he's trying to do something about the broken system indeed, whether you like him or not, the two examples he's cited are correct.
Firstly "broken system", yeah I'm glad hes exposed this.. because before everybody lived in a world that we assumed was all fine and dandy where the worlds elite were doing things in the interests of the poor.
You could probably trace these very vague problems back to when society even started, hes saying nothing new so why give him air time or publicity.
Secondly he gives NO alternatives. At least Karl Marx tried.. and failed.. to create an alternative system.
If I wasn't involved in this society I would wish with all my heart that his revolution happened then all the banks, oligarchs, multinationals and anybody with half a brain fucks off abroad then everybody can turn to him and go "WHAT NOW RUSSELL, YOU FUCKING CLOWN".
He has no plan of action. Marxists have been criticized throughout history because they constantly argue why capitalism fails and is unfair but they give no realistic alternative.
Giving this attention seeking tnuc any attention in the name of "he makes good points we do have issues" is so incredibly disrespectful to people who have dedicated their lives to actually trying to improve things.

Wow, there are so many things wrong with what you wrote. I'm no Russell Brand fan, but you really are showing a lot of ignorance of history there. How could Marxists have been criticised throughout history when the communist manifesto wasn't even written in 1848?Muncey wrote:Hes a clueless tnuc banging on about stuff he knows fuck all about, that could have something to do with it.nitz wrote:why all the hate, at least he's trying to do something about the broken system indeed, whether you like him or not, the two examples he's cited are correct.

Clearly I meant modern history/20th century onwards. I apologise if attention to detail derailed you from the original point. Also Marx and communism was in full force as a movement and a critic of capitalism way before the communist manifesto, so if you wanna nitpick small details get your own right first.karmacazee wrote:How could Marxists have been criticised throughout history when the communist manifesto wasn't even written in 1848?
Nice to see Brand has jumped on the Austerity bandwagon, only 6 years late. This guy just picks buzzwords of the moment and pretends to be the hero to save everybody. Textbook narcissist imo.
Re: THE REVOLUTION NEEDS YOU (amessagefromRusselBrand)
It's him struggling with narcissism that is interesting though.
Like he was so much of a junkie that his soul left him and now he's this subject trying to find a course for his body because his mind feels akward wanting all that attention, and then tries to make it worthwhile for an 'audience'. It's quite noteworthy in the radio shows and they are a laugh tbh.
It must be weird being paid to make shows about yourself while on heroin in a institution like the bbc (maybe ch4) and in your early twenties.
