That would be sufficient. You'd have MIDI cables to/from the synth to send and receive MIDI data, as well as output from the Triton itself for the actual sounds.
what midi data would the rack be sending though? is there any reason a midi in audio out arrangement wouldn't work for the synth?

Midi out wouldnt be necessary unless you were trying to control something in your daw with the synth or were daisy chaining multiple synths.

SP-404 getting lots of shout outs lately.
OctaTrack and OP-1 (esp. the latter) get lots of love too. Any one or combo of these units, a mixer, a decent multi-FX unit - done.

You get 4 tracks to play with, 9 synth engines, a drum sampler, a bunch of (awesome) FX's, all in this keyboard sized package.
how much does ur average synth cost? i wouldn't call it a silly price tag

I had that "boutique crap" kneejerk response too, but a friend of mine got one who's an old MPC-head and it rocks his world - I got to try it out and have to say that it's just a lot of fun to tweak on, it sounds good, and the workflow is nice and easy to focus on instead of getting lost in menus and stuff. Solid build too.
If I had some extra $$$ would definitely pick one up. Seems to hit the sweet spot between live performance capability, portability, and power. While the price point is too high for me personally, it does not seem too high given what it can do.

Given Arturia's fantastic track record with MIDI devices I am going to wait for some user reviews to roll in; however, it promises to be the best deal going in the features for money category. Considering it also does CV. I am crossing my fingers there are no build issues as I really want to rig it up to my Filter Factory for step filter goodness...
I honestly dont *need* a BeatStep since I have Maschine...but for 99USD...

From what I have seen on the videos that came out around NAMM the answer to this is probably a yes.
