Re: Video games causing violence
I agree that video games aren't the primary reason for the occurrence of violent acts.
But, I have to say that violent video games desensitize people to violence. Is that enough to push an unstable individual (or to make it easier for them) to commit an act of violence? For someone with a blurred sense of reality it might be.
Personally after seeing thousands of people "die" on the screen, the depiction of even extremely brutal acts doesn't move me enough to recoil and look away. I don't think that's natural. Does that carry over to viewing actual violent acts in person? I have never had to witness extreme violence first hand (hopefully I never have to), so I don't know how I would react to that. At the same time I never really think whether the violence I see in a game is real or simulated; I'm usually too busy playing the game, or enjoying the movie.

Re: Video games causing violence
Someone post some proper research or gtfo.
Japan is only just banning the possession of kiddy porn because there's no evidence it causes people to go out and fuck kids. They're probably only on it because of the Olympics as well, I bet they don't enforce it for hidden stashes. 'Thought crime' seems to be a Western thing, like 'video games cause' violence.
As far as I can see from the evidence available, there's been no research in to whether the type of games played causes more violence, or just that the more hours spent gaming is a loss to developing social skills which is what ultimately causes violence in gamers. All the researchers just seem to be take measurements of time playing violent games then correlating to it propensity to violence shown. Great correlation, not necessarily causation.
I think they should also measure people's empathy levels, theory of mind, emotional intelligence etc to get a more detailed picture of what's going on. Even the person's back life history, do their parents beat them unnecessarily, do they spend any time out of the house playing with friends etc. I'm not disputing a link between the two because there seems to be one more than not, but oversimplifying it won't help and will probably stigmatise what might be a harmless activity.

Perhaps the thought crime you speak of stems from western religious practices.
That being said, I don't think anybody ever raped a child by accident.

Are you saying we should measure all of those things before allowing people to use violent video games? Or that we should measure them all generally?test recordings wrote:I think they should also measure people's empathy levels, theory of mind, emotional intelligence etc to get a more detailed picture of what's going on. Re: Video games causing violence
Measure them as they are now to start with, i.e. take the same studies banging on about video game and violence links and then redo them in more detail. They should be replicable in the first place to prove a link, adding more detail opens up the number of ways to look at the problem to see how it exactly works.
Then go looking for causation instead of correlation, which would involve more long-term studies

In retrospect, I think being deafblind would be a good enough reason for that to happen. But most people, or at least children anyway, who are deafblind seem to be terrified of physical contact.collige wrote:Ask India.GreenWaffle wrote:Lol how can you accidentally rape anyone tbf (inb4 forcing your bitch into sex)

Re: Video games causing violence
Slenderman was created by Something Awful, brought more to exposure from 4chan and then youtube channels like MarbleHornets (which is pretty damn good) and Everyday Hybrid. Then the shitty video games started coming out (there are plenty of slenderman games out now).
IT"S NOT THE DAMN VIDEO GAMES. I actually just did a paper on this last semester and read quite a few research papers showing how faulty the link is between violent video games and real world violence is, and how in spite of researchers disproving the link it's a stereotype touted by the media and politicians whenever a killer is discovered to play video games to deflect away from issues of mental health or gun control etc.

Causal Relationship or Moral Panic?

There are plenty of research papers that note aggressive behavior immediately after exposed to violent media of any form, but never really delve into long term effects like the one I just linked did.
The only real long term exposure studies on violent media I've come across just suggest an overall desensitization to violence in media and in some cases real life, not pushing people towards being violent or aggressive themselves though.

Actually I had to do a paper on gun control last semester right after the last Ft Hood shooting and just linked one of the research papers I cited above, but yeah, glad to see some new tools have taken up the retard magnet aspect of SNH.
