Check out the EHX Memory Man series. I had the Memory Man with Hazarai at one point and wasn't a huge fan. It seemed quite metallic to my ear, but the others are supposed to be the tits.

I'd still cast a vote for the Strymon El Capistan. You really owe to yourself to at least check out all it can do. It is super deep for a pedal. And really even at 300USD I think it is a steal for what you get. It gives you all kinds of control of tape controls that you usually only get with software like U He Satin or a real tape delay. There is also a spring reverb hidden in side it set up after the delay.

For bonus points pick up an analog filter module so you can do filtered delays. It really is heavenly. I run delays into my Filter Factory all the time : )

I think an El Capistan + an analog filter would be a killer combo. Alternatively an EHX + filter would be fantastic.

I wouldn't recommend RE-201 pedal version, if you like to feedback a lot, get quite crappy, unpleasant digital distortion at the highs, maybe if you have a nice post eq to smooth it out ... But it sounds really awesome when you run it through a guitar amp 'n' speakers...

As for good digis, I heard only good stuff about El Capistan and Line 6 DL4 , tried some Monarch rack delay, sounded good in it's on way, Boss DD-10 also cool ...

And of course, the original RE-201 , Wem Copicat, RE-501 ... or any kind of obscure old tape or analog delays, the fucked up-er the better...

I'm pretty sure you could improvise a tape delay on a cassette player with two tape holders and recording functionality

Absolutely! LAS made this one few weeks ago, sounds great !

Man I wish I was handy with electronics

I can recommend the Evans Echopet, it's cheap and sounds great (unless you fry the circuitry)

I've got one of these, it certainly has plenty of character. It's good value for money.

thanks to everyone that commented with suggestions and information.

i first tried to look into the melos echo chamber and i was really interested in these but couldn't find one for love nor money anywhere.

i then looked into the wem copicat and found quiet a few of these for under £200 on eBay and gumtree and such, nearly ended up buying one until i found out that these things aren't earthed unless you go to get it separately earthed as they are suppose to work with the wem amp which earthes it.

so in the end i found a absolute mint condition space echo re-101, which is essentially the smallest one. but its sat on my desk now as i type this, and its absolutely incredible. the feedback is beautiful and the fact that its hands on makes automation on the fly actually fun.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SPACE ECHO

clean the heads, clean the capstans, replace the felts and tape when needed. owning one of these is a long-term financial commitment, and having it in working order makes it way more enjoyable.

Honestly don't mind buying expensive shit in the beginning.
You can save and add more gear with what you save. It's not much the gear rather than what you do with it.
You'll find a lot of people here and in every forum with a shitload of gear who make total garbage.
The less you got the more creative you tend to be.
So
If you got around 200$ buy a boss RE-20
If you got 300$ buy a Strymon El Capistan
If you got 500$ buy Eventide timefactor or Strymon Timeline
If you got 1000$ or more buy Roland Re-201 or any good tape delay
