This is definitely a risk.

Then again, you listen to a tune lie Dutch Flowers and it doesn't sound bad at all! But then I always liked digidub.

There's nothing wrong with some of it sounding exactly like digidub, as long as most of it doesn't.

i don't know.. it's both, but it's neither of those.. for me - it's almoust the same thing.. cos i mostly listen dubstep.. if you can easily determine my taste = you can easily determine most of dubstep.. i don't say it's necesary bad thing - but still, it concerns me a bit..

everyone says there is no dubstep forumula.. but there definitelly is a dubstep vibe.. that dub skank (or dub step  ).. bwowowowwo *snare* bwowowowow *snare*.. and you nod your head from side to side.. at least most of "pure" dubstep sounds like that.. how far is that from formula?

FWIW there was a similar vibe to Swans back in the 80s -- <basswobble> CRASH <basswobble> CRASH!!! And there's a bit of it in AC/DC, Back In Black especially, which I always thought was due for a ragga refix. Also in obscure 80s Dutch instrumental art-metal band Gore.

I know what you mean (i think!). For me, I enjoy the skank and the wobble and the formula of which you speak, but I think I will only enjoy it so many times. I think when you say 'pure' dubstep you highlight one of the most important issues...what has (or perhaps will) become 'pure' dubstep is a relatively narrow conception of the whole post-garage spectrum. If you go through all the records you have that have come out of this movement, you'll most likely see that there is massive variation from what now seems to be the general conception of 'dubstep' (basically halfstep i suppose). I think the problems will come from boxing things in and standardising. Like you speak of the formula, the skank...but go back and listen to your tunes and see the wealth of variety

Thus far the labels cannot be faulted in my opinion. DMZ have released consistently varied records, tempa (historically) have released all shades of music, hotflush continue to push artists with their fingers and histories in other sounds, planet mu's dubsteppish releases have been varied, boka, dub police, etc etc. If a section of the scene becomes set in a particular template, which I do believe it will, then that will be that, but there will continue to be variety and creative energy splitting off in all directions. There's a lot left in it yet i think. We just might not be such a unified scene anymore

there was a moment that it looked like it's becoming true but hopefully this will not happen

dont assume that variety and skank exclude each other.. a lot of very different tunes were made with skanky feeling - that's the connection beetween many (very different!) dubstep tunes (except the sub-bass)

i'm probably just talking bullshit...

ok well who here has always produced dubstep from day one? and never done anything else apart from dubstep?

because dont producers bringacross influences into other genres thats how it all started anyway?

there is a massive variety of feels and tunes and bass and the rest in the dubstep world

sum1 said on here there are no rules to it,

maybe in time there will be subgenres

There is no formula. The main thing i would say is SUB. Like Kode 9 said in that docu, in an ideal world, anything goes. i agree.

Isn't it kind of ironic? setting strict limitations on music that's supposed to be cutting edge and pushing boundaries?

Before you start a track or do anything, you have an empty page, blank canvas, you could do anything you wanted with it, mozarts fifth, dutty techno, whatever, there are endless possibilities, why limit yourself to a set formula? How will music evolve if people only ever follow one 'way' 'tao'... whatever...
