psytrance of today is not actually very psychedelic imo. most of it is rather monotonous and boring. however, that used to not be the case. back in the day it was called goa, and it was psychedelic, and it transported u... took u on headtrips, experiences of full immersion in sound. nowadays, i only get this feeling from some dubstep, and from some techno-ish music as well - mostly the stuff so aptly named neotrance. when i listen to music by ones like headhunter, djunya, scuba, vaccine, subdivision, boxcutter, toasty, reso, rogue state, etc... then i can't help but hear the psy influence in their sounds. and while i'm neither saying that these guys hang fluoro drapes on their ceiling and burn incense all day, nor that they have any bit of liking for trance music, the psychedelic element in their music cannot be denied. and aside from that, i hold the firm belief that psydub particularly is quite compatible with dubstep, as are some freeform examples of goa of the mid- to late 90s. to demonstrate this i will continue to sneak psy and psydub artists into my dubstep mixes like i have in the past... and my guess is that if i don't explicitly mention this in the tracklist, then most ppl will never ever notice!

i feel you, cuz the artists you listed are pretty much the ones that i appreciate the most. "immersion in sound".... those are the words. (but i think burial should also be added)

almost makes me see a line being drawn between the more "musical" productions versus the "wobblers" or tunes that are basically only good for skanking out to at a rave.

I'll take the less diplomatic stance and say there's a clear line. It would be nice if more tunes had both shelf life and dancefloor appeal.

If a musician needs to make a point of the fact that their music is "musical" then i feel a bit sorry for them.

i could say that the only good psytrance is Bitmonx

the days when PSY was called PSY and not FULL-ON

on the other hand.. the whole culture sucks more and more for each day

i spent 6months in amsterdam about 5 years ago and pretty much ALL the outdoor parties were psytrance and it sucked. but, enough class A's and you'll dance to anything witch is a pity, especially if i find ma self ravin' to bastard psytrance !

Headhunter's really in psy and prog trance. He's just done a remix for a big prog trance act and is writng dubstep with a noticable trance influence. Keep your ears peeled... his fresher beats may well be what you're after.


On a personal note i fuckin' HATE psy-trance. It's disgusting music.... deeply offensive in everyway

I got invited to spin dubstep at an outdoor burner/psy party. Could make for an intresting crossover. I think they'd dance to anything though being theyre minds are expanded beyond all reality. One thing Ive always liked about that scene is the lengths they go to in decor.

some of you are too quick to judge. Say for instance the first time you heard dnb, it was clipz or fresh, you could assume it was all turbo clown shit. You gotta dig though, there is alot of cheese, but these are pretty exceptional examples;

i never really cared for psy before, but that night i danced till sunrise.. strictly vibes

it made me realize there's no sense in dismissing a sound if you haven't experienced it

yeah i'm a space cadet, so the psytrance culture (at least here in the US, which doesn't seem to have alot of indian mystiscm) appeals to me alot.
i actually love drum and bass, dubstep for the music, but psytrance for the culture.

dnb/dubstep culture seems to be people with a beer in one hand who don't really know what partying is about (free 3 day drug fests) again, thats here in the US.
