I've had my Macbook Pro as my only computer for around 3.5 years and it's
basically as new. Great machine. Obviously the battery life is not what it used to be, I
think I can browse on wifi for about 5 hours on a full charge now.
I've never done a fresh install of new OS or anything like reformatting the HD. I'm on
Lion 10.7.5. Think I might try a clean install of the new OS this year.
If I ever need a desktop computer again, I'd probably build a hackintosh.

Lol this old question is still cropping up. No, macs aren't better than PCs, /thread.
To be honest, any decent computer will do the job these days. Computing power hasn't increased much in the past few years, due to the limits of silicon. There has been a few percent improvements each year, but nothing like the scaling we saw in the 90s(from a few mhz to a few ghz). So if I were to buy a system today, I'd just be looking for a decent quad core, and it'd be an Intel Haswell, or Broadwell if it's for a laptop. 8Gb or more of RAM, an SSD drive and preferably a dedicated GPU so that the system memory bandwidth isn't taken up by graphics. I find this helps some plugin interfaces to run a bit smoother.
Whether you go for a Mac or PC doesn't matter too much, unless you want to run Logic, which is Mac only. It really just comes down to preference, which OS do you like using, and do you like buttons with your trackpad.

Seconds on the multicores, but you need to make sure the applications you run support multithreading or it's a waste
