I play loads of random shit instruments, but none very well, know a bit of theory, and it's handy. Last year in college we had to take some sheet music, copy it into sibelius, save as midi, into Logic, make it sound acceptable. Taught me loads, have to say, esp with respect to arranging tunes (never my strong suit).
Learn all you can, it won't hurt, but don't think it's necessary either.

i've playing guitar for about 3 year now, and i must say it does help with composing stuff on the computer, helps with knowing what chords/notes go nicley, harmonising and stuff, chord changes, chord structures.
even the most basic knowledge can really help
sometimes ill go fiddle around on an acoustic for a bit, find something nice write it down, and base a whole tune around just that little, the more places u can draw influence and inspiration from, the better
