half the stuf mentioned on here int really jungle tho is it.
as much as i'm a big big fan of photek, surely rings around saturn etc class as DnB?
was hoping to learn something of gems i missed at the time cos i was too busy rebelling against being rebellious to check jungle properly til it became DnB. fool.
int there no older heads here can give us a jungle top 10 of stuf to track down?

The first jungle tune I bought was Stamina by Dream Team, still sounds as boisterous as ever. And Warriors on the other side - beauty.

forgot about this little gem, way ahead of its time!
so much of this stuff make things coming out today sound incredibly boring in comparison.

I'll have to dig through and see what I can find cause I've only got a few from round that period. It was when jungle was just getting identified rather than hardcore. Sensimilla crisis by Smoking Joe, Chronic Breaks and Watch Out by D'Cruze, Babylon Timewarp by Durban Poison (maybe more hardcore tbh), Bludclot Artattack by Ed Rush, Renegade Snares by Omni Trio more the 93/94 end if you want to do some digging, but pretty certain most of this was under 150bpm.
Although the production's a bit iffy on some of these (well I like it, but I'm not that fussed about pristine productions), I think the music at the beginning of a scene is generally at it's most interesting as it hasn't yet established it's boundaries or had an influx of musos so there's always this blissful ignorance of what's "right". Especially when the technology had not been around for that long, plenty of scope for experimentation.

i agree - i like the roughness of production sometimes, particularly in soul, funk, reggae etc. a lot of modern music is overproduced and removes the life out of the music.
the time when you mention brought some amzing tunes like acen - trip II the moon. I used to have some good tapes i got off a mate from uni, but i lost them (duuh)

i'm with both of you. i think people get to into making everything sound clear and perfect ect. if a tune has got a vibe its got a vibe regardless of the quality.
some other tunes to hunt down that are true jungle to me with barley a ragga vocal in sight:
potential badboy- work the box (l l l l lets go)
shy fx- dirty games
dj ron- let it play/crackman
foul play- vol 3
photek- jump mk11
dj clarkee- ep vol 11 (more of a hardcore ep but the last track too much)
coolhand flex- mars
sacred- do it together (london massive)
shonky- just thinking about durban poisen has set me off. i;m gonna tell work ive got the winter pooh bug and go home for a mix

yeah, also really like a lot of it, but there's something thats a part of what i think of as the bristol sound that i dunno, slightly irritates me as well. its something with the drums. they're often kind of stiff and rigid compared to what i think of as 'true' jungle.
all those krust and size tunes and stuff like set speed and, er, cant think of which others and cant b arsed searching, maybe warhead... but the breaks r somehow less loose, choppy and deconstructed than other stuff. still killer tunes, but u can see the transition from jungle to the techy rigidity of DnB coming on the horizon
source direct were heavy as fuck too. were they from milton keynes or somewhere?
and shut up and dance: dance before the police come..just for the cover
