Dubstep at present... i was wondering???

great topic grand

i have been thinking about this alot also of late.

the sound has changed so much in such a short space of time, the mystical, intense, deep sound of somewhere far far away has
been over-shadowed by alot of wobble 'dancefloor' tunes - which i am in no way condemning.
But i totally understand where you are coming from grand and i also feel i would like alot more of those types of original sounding tunes.

even the las couple years - I always have and always will love skream - his tunes are fantastic now (oskilattaah!!!)- but i did totally adore the skreamizm 1 - the untitled track on there sends shivers down my spine - its almost hypnotic (go on ... get off ya chair and go put it on!! hehe) Glamma too -percy there and Rottan -- fuk it i love the whole of it!
By no way am i saying anything against skream - but the sound of dubstep has changed alot and by comparing two of his tunes (as his older stuff is sik and his new stuff is sik!) to me paints a picture of how the sound has changed.

dare i say dubstep is becoming a lot more 'polished' and (sorry in advance) a bit like dnb sounding!?? And i know there are alot of dnb producers making dubstep now --- hmmmmm

but we are so very lucky - jus have to dig a little deeper - anti social boys - appleblim played some different shit at the last FWD (ill set!) etc

and agreeing with a few others
- to me mala= dubstep in every way.
he is one of the most amazing men i have ever met - his spirituality, safeness, kindness, passion ... his label, the events, his music - he to me is what dubstep is all about. that sound, that vibe. You know i say as long as we've got Mala in dubstep - everything will be okay...

Sometimes you need to move away from something to see what you've left and appreciate it. Some new producers will pick up on the older sounds and mix it with new ideas, and the scene moves on, simultaneously inspiring the old guard. It's young and finding its feet, a little introspection and rose-tinted reminiscing will no doubt fuel producers before long and the spiral continues upwards.

Couldn't agree more with this. Although I only got into Dubstep early 2006, I have noticed a seachange in the style of sets. Used to love just closing my eyes in the club and zoning out...haven't been able to do that for a long time...

But like people have been saying, there are those keeping that vibe alive. Appleblim particularly stands out in my mind...really enjoyed the sets I've seen of his recently. There's a lot of variety and warmth in his selections. Can still find those vibes in a Geiom set as well.

And, like was said, as long as Mala's about...

Grand I know what you're talking about my man. I was listening to that youngsta and loefah 2005 rinse fm set yesterday, there is a tangible hunger in the music, an understated swagger that only comes from the knowledge that the producer hasn't got to satisfy the taste of an audience; only their own, hell they hardly had an audience at all at the time. It gets me excited to hear those tunes again and the new ideas in them, I remember why I first started to love the music, half step was a relatively new idea and in a stage of great creativity.

over the last few months.. i have heard allot of people talk about this issue.. so why does it take someone like me to address it..... maybe i am gonna have to get a weapon of choice .. book me some time of and hold some of those producers to ransom.. make a beat.. that inspires me or its the paddle ... lol..

im just saying there has been an undercurrent of unrest... so why hasn't anyone said hang on a second. maybe we all need to start listening to garage again ...

or those that stopped, pick it back up.

This thread's warming my heart to know that it's not just my group of mates who feel a bit...undernourished by the current trends in the music.

Been returning to a lot of old sets recently. Hearing a tune like Ancient Memories for the first time in ages is pretty special...reminds me what attracted me to dubstep.

in all honesty i think alot of the music then is far more ahead of the stuff i listen to now.. i am a big believer in karma... the cyclical nature of life.. do you think music in our scene will go back that way given the current environment??? as in the stuff that is influencing producers now?

Au contraire, I think its exactly this kind of self referencing that kills creativity and innovation in a genre. there is no point looking back to try and recapture the zeitgeist, move forward and create your own.

i never really know how to articulate what i'm sayin here, but i do much prefer the deeper stuff in general, although i can appreciate going mad to a tune, i can appreciate far more being able to just appreciate in my own little bubble in the dance, and like someone else said i haven't been able to do that for a while, i also remember hearing tunes like 9 samurai for the first time and literally getting goosebumps like, have not felt that way about a tune for a while...

The fact that a tune like 'Broken' can sit so well next to the old Digi's stuff etc shows that there are those still bringing that sound.

It's very true. dubstep has changed a lot a know what your all saying. I don't like all this drum and bassy double time stuff thats coming out. Some of it sounds to me like dubstep with slow drum and bass over the top.People like the Digital Mystikz always make quality tunes. Half time big steppy dark stuff and there are still good tunes coming out. Dare I say it in some places dubstep is becoming formulated but all music does in the end. As its become more popular it changes to suit the average Joe and not us music heads! Thats the reason new stuff is created and new genres appear. Genres start of underground, then they get good, then they get popular, then everyone jumps on the band wagon, then they get commercial and formulated and someone invents something even better. My opinion anyway.
