depends how used to the synth i am and what presets are avaialable. If i need a piano it's much more conveniant to load up a piano patch and tweak it depending on your needs.
however i would always learn how to fully use a synth before u start using lots of presets, you will deffo be missing out on stuff

very rarely... I create Reason Combinator patches all day instead..

But occassionally I do hear a preset I like and use it... Satan FM on Sytrus Synth in Fruity is pretty weighty for example

Anyway.. who cares if people use presets... a good tune is a good tune...

yeah i have to say that if its a hardware synth, i'll play with it all day long with no qualms about it. its software synths that i find myself less likely to get deeply into. with the exception of carbon 2 in reaktor and a few others. There is something special about reason though. It must be the modular nature of the program thanks to the combinator, but i find it infinitely tweakable.

If I ever found a synth preset I liked I wouldn't be against using it.

It's finding the good 1s is the problem, besides I'm 1 of those ppl that likes spending ages making patches only to delete them after 2 hours of tweaking cos it got shit about an hour and a half earlier.

Depends on the quality. Some factory presets are just unbelievably shoddy but others are fairly decent. Still, both can be pretty useful building blocks for a tune.

Not the tools, but the way you use them etc.

i've got no idea how to 'start from scratch' in my VST's so i use all the wank presets and hope for the best when messing around.

who gives a fuck anyway. you can mangle presets with processing anyway. if the end result is good, i couldn't care less what synth patches the producer used.

nobody complains about low sine waves, and thats about as simple and preset as you can get!

my point being, you could be the ultimate badman at making your own patches, but be shit at everything else. some five year old that rinses all the polysix presets could come in with some interesting beat that pisses all over your self indulgent synth madness that nobody except you appreciates.

if people hear something that blows them away like "howd he do dat???"

its much more impacting than "I got that synth preset"

The only people who think "howd he do dat" are your peers. Most normal, rational human beings (ie. Non music-making people) just either like a tune or don't. Most of the 'clever' things go unnoticed because they don't listen to things and try to deconstruct them like we do.

Are we really just about impressing peers with our technical chops?

Well precisely. The calibre of some dubstep that is getting bigged up is extremely suspect (or any other genre really) but then having been producing music for years now I pick up on shit that most people wouldnt have a clue about.

Most presets are just sounds and dont really make a tune unless you do the right thing with them. The opposite of that for example is 2D, taking a bait preset and making that the whole composition. Theres a big difference. (but this topic is dead as fuck already)

Again it really depends, in general none of my sounds are pure preset, though most of them are BASED on presets but i think you would have to spend a lot of time to notice it. (because of effects, filters and me fucking with the preset in the first place)

It depends on what I am doing really..

Like when I do bass, I know exactly how to make the kind of sound I want.. I haven't even made a patch for it.


For leads and shit like that, I'll usually start with a preset and tweak it further. I have no problem using presets.

alot of my friends are pretty harsh critics and have good taste in music (and only a few are dubstep heads)

so yes

I feel as if I can impress my biggest critics, then I have made a solid tune

I never, ever think "How'd he do dat?" about synth patches when I hear a tune. Because the answer is always "He fucked about with the knobs until he found something interesting." Yawn.

It shouldn't be about tricks. It's not skateboarding, it's making music. I don't care if someone spends three months building their own synth out of resistors and solder, or if they drag their old Casio out of the attack and use the Flute setting. If the tune is good, the tune is good.

But for me, not being all that musical, more technical, fucking about with synths, samples and fx, just finding cool sounds, is half the fun.
