I love how quickly these things can get out of hand on the internet.

Why Ben, have you got plans for a Guardian blog too?
hah, you can't even pretend he deserved what he got, he's 19 ffs

I love how people aren't allowed to make mistakes anymore :)

maybe I don't have a thick enough skin but if it was me I'd remember something like that forever.

all he did was write a blog, just in the wrong place

That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger Ben. Apart from strokes, heart attacks, amputations and wasting diseases of course.

Although the story goes that he's not connected to a Guardian member, isn't from a public school and has paid for his own trip, as the opposite was assumed I can see why people might be a bit narky about it, seeing as that seems to be a pretty popular hate stereotype at the moment - people that don't have that at their disposal may feel like it's just another pampered person going on a jolly and rubbing everyone's noses in it (see also My Super Sweet Sixteen, virtually any property programmes and lifestyles of the rich and famous swill). A lot of media seems to be a constant reminder to the havenots what they don't have, which might have a lot to do with it.

Although having said that, why people consistently read things they know are going to anger them does seem pretty dense.

as someone put in the comments on there.... he shouldn't feel too down about it, as most of the comments were at the directors at the guardian who allowed him into the position.

exactly, people were flinging abuse at him based on some perceived character type they know they're supposed to hate, seeing as them and all their internet buddies pride themselves on how 'twisted and bitter' they are... I can't believe so many people actually registered to add to the 400 odd comments on the page as well.. someone on dissensus said something like it was reminiscent of large groups standing behind the school bully and pointing, which definitely rings true.

even if he was as bad as all that, he still wouldn't deserve that really. take the guy down a peg or two by all means but there's no reason to kick him while he's down.. and that was like 300 people kicking him all at once. people are idiots.

good point ben, its one of those situations where its probably best to just ignore it if it pisses you off, more people should realise that just cos you don't like something you can just ignore it rather than slaying it into the ground

Was probably a squat juice takeover by the looks of it. To be honest though, on the Comment is Free section on the Guardian, they're not generally much nicer a lot of the time, and that's usually people that are old enough to know better, rather than youngsters with a dislike for posh kids. You gotta have some balls to rise above that sort of constant abuse (or just ignore the comments and collect the cheque which seems a lot smarter)

Trial by ordeal every time :D

I probably would have found it a lot funnier if there wasn't an actual person at the end of the abuse. Slag off things, trends, annoyances, politicians and celebrities (don't count as people to my mind) but do think it's a bit much to just berate them if they've done nothing to you.
