you divert to your alternate which would have been within flying distance, all big commercial jets are required to carry enough fuel for at least 2 hours more then their flightplan
and i know he came around and landed fine that doesnt make it right, a few years ago dallas airport was studied during times when there were storms over the airport that exceeded recommended landing conditions, despite the fact that most airlines set limits for crosswinds and windshear and on most of these days during the study the weather exceeded the limits more 2 thirds of the planes landed, and of those almost half had to make a go around
this is a symptom of extreme pressure on pilots to not divert there planes and incurr extra costs to the airlines, if this plane had crashed everyone would be asking how such an experianced crew decided they could make a landing, we shouldnt really be praising this act of reclessness with 170 peoples lives, but as i said its not all his fault, airlines should make sure that pilots are fully aware of the weather they are allowed to fly into and land in, after all weather is the biggest danger to a large aircraft. Also it should be considered that sometimes airlines will put a pilot on a flight, that if it is delayed by an hour (which is fairly common) he is running the risk of running over the maximum 12 shift, which will get both the airline and him in trouble with the FAA
these are all symtoms of the cheap flights that are available these days, they have to save money wherever they can and it reduces saftey in our skys massivley
