i fucking hate flying, i find two sleeping pills, an ipod full of mellow music and a few beers helps though
the IT guy where i work flew into san francisco recently and hit the runway completely side on, pilot managed to rescue it though
gibraltar airport is quite similar to wellington nesslei - short with sea at both ends, also cars and stuff drive across it all day when the planes aren't landing, any debris that may fall off them goes onto the runway and can make the planes skid

I think the pilot should be praised for saving the plane, however he should have never put himself into that position, both lufthansa and airbus set limits for landing in crosswinds, and airbus's limit is around 40knots , if the wind speed was 150mph, the plane should not have attempted a landing, also you would have thought that a major international airport would have sufficiant radar and wind detection systems to have known that a landing was not safe, esspecially without a working ILS on the runway which gives the correct approach angle and glide slope

yeah but what you gonna do if you can't land the plane? fuel supplies ain't unlimited...gonna have to come down sometime

Lol if it was LDN i'd start circling it with a tour & charge admission.
And on the left... you see the London Japs Eye...

forgot i started this thread
i can't stand flying because it's just so fucking wrong. the plane shouldn't be up there and the amount of tiny little adjustments the pilots have to make that could go HORRIBLY FUCKING WRONG at any moment is huge. i live next to London City Airport and watching them come in when there's even the slightest bit of crosswind is terrifying.
it ruins holidays for me as well, cause for 2 weeks up to the point i'm shitting myself about the flight over there, and then after a moment's euphoria after the landing i'm shitting myself all holiday about the flight back home.
nice spot for some sunbathing:

yeah i sorta get that a little myself pk, bloody horrible
that beach landing is just stupid, anyone in the wrong place on the beach could be sucked into the engines, and it cannot be good for people's ears!

the story was corrected - it was the plane that was doing 150mph, not the wind.
had a pretty sketchy crosswind landing last week into Manchestoh - although landings like that with a decent airline scare me a lot less than some tosswit pilot in an eastern european budget airline (which i fly with every couple of months!)
the missus's parents were due to fly this week on Belavia, the Belarussian national carrier. unfortunately they can't because the plane crashed last week, turning upside down on takeoff and catching fire
PK - if it's any comfort, airlines like Belavia are not allowed into UK airspace. any carriers have to be watertight with safety, documentation, servicing, blah blah blah and if there's any doubt then they're not let in. so when you're going on holiday you won't be on just any shonky old crate!
never flew into the old Hong Kong airport - i went there about 2 years after it moved. gutted, it would have been well mad...

you divert to your alternate which would have been within flying distance, all big commercial jets are required to carry enough fuel for at least 2 hours more then their flightplan
and i know he came around and landed fine that doesnt make it right, a few years ago dallas airport was studied during times when there were storms over the airport that exceeded recommended landing conditions, despite the fact that most airlines set limits for crosswinds and windshear and on most of these days during the study the weather exceeded the limits more 2 thirds of the planes landed, and of those almost half had to make a go around
this is a symptom of extreme pressure on pilots to not divert there planes and incurr extra costs to the airlines, if this plane had crashed everyone would be asking how such an experianced crew decided they could make a landing, we shouldnt really be praising this act of reclessness with 170 peoples lives, but as i said its not all his fault, airlines should make sure that pilots are fully aware of the weather they are allowed to fly into and land in, after all weather is the biggest danger to a large aircraft. Also it should be considered that sometimes airlines will put a pilot on a flight, that if it is delayed by an hour (which is fairly common) he is running the risk of running over the maximum 12 shift, which will get both the airline and him in trouble with the FAA
these are all symtoms of the cheap flights that are available these days, they have to save money wherever they can and it reduces saftey in our skys massivley

Used to be terrified of flying. I haven't really lost my fear of it, i just enjoy the thrill of having the shite scared out of me during takeoff, and sometimes landing.
Have had an engine shut down on me once, that wasn't fun. It's extremely unlikely, but at the same time, one of the worst ways i can think of to die.
Now the girlfriend has moved continents it looks like i may be flying a hell of a lot more...
My mum's been through worse though, she was on a plane that landed all wrong and had to abort like the one in the crosswinds thing. Apparently people were screaming and crapping themselves and everything, not good.
