Is it me or is Dubstep getting a bit generic already?

If you get bored just go to your next nearest dubstep night. Everytime i have a slight twinge of, hmmm maybe that tune was a bit samey, Kontakt rolls around and I have my faith fully boosted back up. Aint really a easy listening genre you get me?! You need some pressure

Yes
90% of it is very generic. I suppose it's inevitable though, genres have to define themselves. Gone are the days when you could go to a big night and hear lot's of experimental different sounding music.
Lot's of good stuff is still out there though, just have to be abit more selective than you did a year ago.

This is the problem nowadays, more & more people are getting into the sound and majority all ask who to check.. the same names come up ( which is good) but its gonna restrict you to a certain sound. Best thing is to download some sets from various people and go from there. Find out for yourself what you like. There are so many good tunes/producers out there who get skipped because they aint doint the fashionable thing.

I dont think forums fuck up anything, its the producers who make the music. I know im in the minority so theres no issue at the moment.

Last night i went to was Mary Anne Hobbs at Fabric. It just seemed like 2 out of 3 songs were BIG BASS drone. One note bassline at an incredible volume. To be honest it was a bit disappointing. Maybe that wasn't really representing the scene very well, but i left the club disappointed.

Definitely think theres a lot of good stuff still out and about- i love Reso's stuff at the moment becuase its not one mad bassline for 3 minutes straight: theres more structure and a melody but still an orginal sounding bassline. Just wish some producers would do something then move on.

Re: the Benga LP, I've heard a few tracks that aren't on there (perhaps more recently made), like Urban Fox that I much prefer. As someone stated.

I havn't caught Mary Anne Hobbs DJ but im an avid listener of her show and she is probably the last person you can accuse of playing generic music.
Her Radio 1 show is ridiculously eclectic.

ahhhhhhhhh u know wot i can agree.

its one of those albums where its got a couple of tunes ill definetly tump all daY BUT at the same time alot of the tracks were a bit mediocre.. a bit "cos im benga ill make some track with a bait bass hook and loads of fucking weird sounds cos i can get away with it" - one of them ones where if it was by someone else everyone would be thinking wot the fuck is this? but cos its benga everyones like ahhhhhh - i see wot he did there. its definetly an acqired taste and needs more getting used to, at least from me personally

Took me a while to find some dstep that really grabbed me at all. Kept trying, but I think I was being steered towards other peoples favorites which werent necessarily a sound I was into. I was actually under the impression for a while that everyone was using the same wobble over and over. A guy from here even got pretty upset with me about thinking that way. (Hi Thinking!

) But it was just based off of what I was being feed when I asked what to check out. Well I stopped asking, started checking sets out, started going to shows and guess what. There is some KILLER freaking dubstep being made. My favorites right now are MattyG, 6Blocc, U-Ome, Pawn, Boxcutter and Benga. There is something very high energy and upbeat about the way these guys are laying down the 140bpm. I cant get enough of it right now. Start your own research and try and find things that others may not be into. It saved my dubstep experience as a whole.

If by big bass drone you mean a big, underlying padded sub then yeah id say 2 out of 3 songs might be about right! I always find that those long, deep sub notes become the vibrations that put you (or me at least!) into the kind of zoned out state, that when you then hear the melody on top of it (aswell as other, slightly less bassy basslines!) becomes this whole out of body bizniss that I just cant get enough of

If you found it annoying though, I would hiiiiighly suggest getting a pair of ear plugs! I was absoloutely amazed at the clarity of sound you get through ear plugs (MUCH clearer than without!) you can really hear every part of the tune, rather than the odd catchy bit you recognise over this wall of rattling bass! A decent pair might set you back £15 (unless you want custom moulded ones, but then youre talking 10 times that) and theyre gonna give your ears a hell of a break too!

Definitely know what you mean. It seemed like on an album of 14 tracks there are 15 musical ideas with not much development. Nothing really hit me in the face as genius, whereas some of the tracks i've heard of his did smack me in the nuts.

Couldnt' agree more wiggle baron, i know this makes me sound like a pussy but i left at 3 cos my ears were just caning. i wasn't enjoying any of it.

I suppose becuase i used to listen to a lot of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher and that sorta stuff i think its possible to have loadsa stuff going on in a piece of music but for it to still be danceable. One musical idea going on in a track just doesn't do it for me.

Since Christmas? Oh my God, 3 months, that's such a long time! If you honestly expect a genre to change in 3 months then you're seriously looking at everything the wrong way. It took 8/9 years to get to this point! Chill and have faith.

I never said i want the genre to change, but does that mean i should be exposed to three months of 15 basic tunes, and 300 variations on that theme? From what i can gather dubstep IS meant to be this constantly evolving, genre-spanning movement (thats what the producers say), yet i'm being told otherwise.

Just my opinion.

Do some searching, theres plenty of non-generic dubstep out there, stop looking at the usual suspects and look a little further afield. Our shows focus on the more non generic stuff so you can check em out every thursday from 8-10pm on www,react.fm, Threnody has a very interesting show every thursday too from 12-2am(gmt). Thats just for starters.

In terms of production, check out my stuff, H.O.D, Reso, Threnody, Redline, Emalkay, Randomer, Search and Destroy, Lone Wolf, Elemental, Sully Shanks, Swerve, Sines, Afterdark, Subdivision, Takomo....

That should do you for now

So if you are seriously looking alternatives to the current sound just do some research, theres always suttin new out there to entice your ears
