Establishing A Sound

I don't think any producers come up with their own style completely independently- most of them evolve from being inspired by their favourite music and pursue particular elements and end up unique. There are probably exceptions, but few and far between.

Someone like Burial for example- I suppose it was partly down to the kit he was using, I'm sure using a different method to everyone else is a good way to end up different.

I find that I generally end up making stuff that sounds like stuff I make naturally, just because I tend to follow the same processes, use the same synths etc. that work for me with each tune.

this also works for me

my bass has a "rubbery" characteristic to it because I use my hardware synth for my main bass evertime

imho, this gives me a distinct sound that can be heard in almost every tune I have made in the last 3 years
