perhaps i been out of the UK for too long, didn't realise it was a class thing. i thought chav just meant someone who dresses in sportswear, likes burberry and wears too much cheap jewelery. everything else i can safely ascribe to (big edit, my bad) british people generally: general random shagging, binge drinking and funny accents (yeah even the queen has an accent).

yeah i wouldn't necessarily say it's a class thing. plenty of middle class people act and dress like chavs (for want of a better word). it's definitely more of a mindset thing than a class thing, even if the vast majority of them are amongst the poor

and lol @ "even the queen has a funny accent" - she's got the worst of them all. hearing her voice makes me want to hit things[/u]

yep, a young boy, a lad.

used to get used (among the bourgoise) to mean "pikey," as in cheap or shoddy.
(more social profiling and prejudice)

once it got really popular ppl started coming up with "proper" definitions as per common usage until we arrived at the trailer-trash/townie/working-class version we now know and love-to-hate, replete with fashion statements and lifestyle elements.
(and which some have chosen as a model to aspire to)

in its current incarnation it's an instrument of fear, classism and social division.
all about the chavs and the chav-nots.

i find the most interesting thing is how alot of fashion and music comes from the "underclass". bassline has got alot of rudeboys and chavs involved in it, people might mock them but u know secretly they feel the scene. i know i am!

Sounds kinda stupid to me like most British slang....but you guys prolly say the same about u.s slang, and since there are no 'chavs' here stateside so its a location based thing I reckon

kinda makes me think that class is to the UK what race is to the US (even though its really still class.....but....not in the mood to spell it out)

yeah we got basically the same thing in aus, 'lads'... basically trouble makers wearing their hats high off their forehead complete with stripey polo, nike shorts and trainers... Wouldn't have a problem with em if they didn't bash so many peeps on the regular
