this is what I find works better than traditional sequencing for getting 'energy'

Patch every parameter to as much midi as you can make sense of, play around untill you're getting a feel for it, hit record and just jam out a tune. Start with whatever you are more comfortable with. I start out with pads and FX, record a few minuets worth while just imagining what I want the drums and bass to sound like, and build ontop of that :).

not sure if that is relevant to what you're talking about but something to try anyway.

sounds interesting, I usually start with the beat programming, but that is because I used to have lots of difficulties coming up with percussion patterns but now this has changed maybe I should focus on getting a few melodies n shit out there again,...
