To be honest, I've spent several weeks downloading and testing every program I could find in a bid to discover a free setup I was happy to use myself. While the software mentioned and linked to is mostly freeware, this thread really reflects what I believe to be a functional and useful softstudio setup.Slothrop wrote:This should be a sticky, especially if Futures Untold doesn't mind keeping the original post updated with the extra suggestions.
I don't actually want to modify the contents of the thread into a thread about free software. I believe that justifies a new thread altogether or inclusion in the Dubstep Production Forum Bible.
I've already asked Daft tnuc to include a link to this thread in the Dubstep Production Forum Bible. In my opinion, that is a really great thread!

For the sake of conciseness within the Dubstepforum production subforum, I think that the Dubstep Production Forum Bible thread should be refered to and contributed too more as opposed to this one....!

With regards to the licencing issue surrounding Reaper, I'm not sure where I draw the line.
Here's my perspective:
I feel that ultimately, Cockos have already made their decision to allow people to use their software for free. Unless they become draconian like Waves, they now have to rely on the good will of the music production community to support them financially.
In my opinion, the more people that start using Reaper, the more people will ultimately buy the software thus keeping the program in active development and food on the developers plate!
While I don't promote warez to the young people I work with, I do promote Reaper. What is to stop those young people from going online, downloading Reaper for themselves, creating a commercial album and not paying for their licence...??!

With regards to the forum rules surrounding warez & the illigal distribution of software, I'll happily remove the link to the download bundle if asked to do so by a mod. (Or I get banned, this thread gets locked and I bugger off to another production forum to start the process of being banned again! Hee hee hee)
I realise that some of the software I've listed and linked to is not necessarily freeware *by definition*. However, all of the software that I've listed and linked to has been made freely available by the authors of the software. They have chosen to distribute their software either as a free download or on the cover mount of a computer music magazine....

So where do we draw the line on Dubstepforum?
Do I remove the links to prevent the illigal distribution of evaluation software? (The legally correct thing to do and in accordance with the ToS of Dubstepforum.com no doubt!)
Do I change the thread title to something like, "Free Softstudio Based on Demos & Evalutionware"?
Or can we accept that this is probably the closest thing we can get to a legaly free music production setup that we can promote to newcomers?

Personally, I am going to continue using the set of programs I've listed as my main softstudio setup until I can afford to pay for the licences of some of the more expensive programs I use.
Furthermore, as a youth worker, I shall continue promoting this setup to any young person who's interested in music production. At the very least I don't risk having Waves knocking on my door because I've taught some kid to use bittorrent whilst at work!

Thoughts and discussion appreciated..!
