i understand eq/filters are essentially same thing. what im saying is you should try your hardest to use the actual synth's features to get the sound you want before resorting to EQ plug ins... not that its true for every situation, as nothing is in this game, but generally speaking

I usually eq it first, get the freqs out that I don't want. Then compress and eq it 'into' the mix. But, i'm no expert and I don't have a typical dubstep sound.
I don't like to use stereo wideners in a mix too much, they're unpredictable. I have to have it I use it near the end of the fx-chain, or rather use it on a couple of channels at a time.
