elgato wrote:by the way does anyone know anything about this out of interest...

on a few RIP 12s / mix cds, i've noticed that they use the terms 'Up North' mixes and 'Down South' mixes, North referring to the darker wild reesey tunes, South to the clubby 'soulful' sounds.. is that North/South London, or North/South of England?

i am interested whether at that point ( i think 97/98 ) there was already this kind of distinction, and that up North this stuff was getting so big that early, so much so that it was the 'Up North' sound?
Am guessing the north/ south of england, being as the niche club was around at this sort of time and it's where the northern sound sprouted from.

Am guessing before anyone gets on one, dont actually know for sure.

Thanks for the upload elgato!

In the interview RIP did in Future Music they say the Up North / Down South thing is about all of England, I like how Wideboys have kept this goin as well, but I think thats just out of having to come up with names for the 100million remixes they do of every tune!

thats interesting

really surprised that the distinction was so clear cut so early, to the extent that the reesey stuff wasn't seen primarily as a London thing anymore

glad people are feeling the mix, out to Owen Griffiths on that though! and of course Oris Jay!

Average Joe mix i mentioned now up downthread
