I remember when I first started producing (back in the last ice age)

I found the most awesome billy cobham loop

3 weeks later I heard a bill laswell tune and he used the exact same part

people will always use samples that you use, no matter how abstract they are.

the music (not just the samples) needs to be what makes the tune rememberable

keep on keepin' on

*and get used to it LOL

I could do with a bit of advice, i like the tune overall but I don't have much experience in mixing and EQ'ing and the like.

Can anyone give me some advice?

sounds alright but the 6 million ways to die sample has to go tbh.

Its been used in so many genres and is very cliche.

good work tho.

Dont use samples from sample packs then! Make your own! If your going to use samples from a pack you got to used only parts of it and add FX and do something different with it.

ahhh yea that was from a sample pack i found on here, every time i use a sample from it i hear another tune with one in! when it comes to sampling theres always gonna b someone else who has thought of it before, or hears ur version n thinks hmmm i wanna do sumthin with that. its a natural part of the evolving recycling world of music. jus add ur own personal touches n that. sometimes as well ill use a sample in a tune and then take it out when the tunes finished, if its a good enough track it will stand up without it!

of course, the real solution to this is to do all of your own sound design from scratch... no loops, no samples you downloaded from the internet, no pre-settings, just raw synthesis and/or field recordings.

it's a lot of fun, and it makes your music 1000x more personal.

the only flip side to this is something like, say, burial

Haha, so true. I'm really starting to fuck off my girlfriend now, because I keep getting my phone or a pad out in the middle of movies to write down the time of a good sample.

lol, enit!! its all about originality. ive ripped some real quality vocals lately from sources i stumbled on by mistake. its how you end up using them though. i wouldnt use something i had heard on a tune of any other genre.
you could build a tune around a sick vocal, or you could build a tune knowing it needed one to really set it off, but you have to choose the right one, it has to fit the overall vibe and needs to be processed correctly. i think sometimes a correctly used movie vocal can mean the difference between a good tune and a great one

I'm not a veteren producer or anything, but there is more sample-able material made every day than we could possibly use. Turn on the TV, internet radio, go outside, tinker with stuff in your room. I was watching Obama speak on the TV the other day and that dude better get ready to be sampled haha. If you like him or not, his voice would be wicked in some tunes (until it gets worn out).

i think you can do it dude, you just gotta be inventive. for instance, a snare sound could be made by layering field recordings and topping it off with some filtered white noise/pink noise blast.. record some hand claps and pitch them down, layer them..

music is really fucking easy when you stop and think about it.
