Yea.... Thank the good old government and city of DC for making all the fun shit die. Remember Nations (RIP), (one of the biggest and best clubs on the east coast, in it's heyday one of the best in the US) the EDGE (RIP), and all those strip joints?

i miss old SE... ben you wouldnt even recognize it now... they are building the first LEED (aka all green, zero carbon building) at 1015 half st where nation used to sit. pretty funny. and then the stadium and all that shit.

and yeah kids DC really isnt that dangerous anymore... they went on a building spree in most of all the 'bad' areas and shit. i used to live in a chill little rowhow in takoma (ne dc side) before they bulldozed it and put up fucking like $600K 1 bedroom condos...

DC is officially the hardest american city to drive into or out of. It's why we stopped hiring french city planners.

the music in DC to catch is (was? havent' heard much since the 90s) is go-go. From what i remember, go-go gigs had gotten so violent that after you went through the metal detectors, you had to put on booties so that no one would steal your shoes. I'm hoping i'm not remembering this right and that this didn't happen, but... DC's got a gully side like few other cities on the east coast.

There is (was?, again?) a couple of good record shops around dupont circle. I think phantasmagoria may still be there, as well.

the 930 and black cat clubs are US live-music institutions. Dave Grohl's part owner of one of them.

Otherwise the things to do in DC really are the overground, populist things: the smithsonian, the capitol, mall, washington monument, jefferson and lincon memorials, and the still-extremely-moving vietnam memorial. They've probably finished the WWII memorial by now as well. If yr into yr US hardcore, you could try to seek out the whole dischord records world.

oh yeah the best ethiopian food i've ever had was in adams morgan, at some place that felt more like someone's house than a restaurant. seek and ye shall find.

as far as the punk stuff.. smashed moved from georgetown to adams morgan after a fire left them totally fucked..

go-go scene is pretty much dead now, coz of the problems you said above..

DC is culturally dying out.. it's sad, coz this place as a heaven for indy start ups since the late 70's. Lotso f good stuff came from the politicial atmosphere

unfortantly the MAN won.. and everything is on the way out..

yes! the DJ hut. that's the one i was thinking of. it's on, like, the 2nd floor of a building?

sad to hear about the state of the DC underground, or current lack thereof. I always thought of it as this hotbed of underground energy; guess we'll just call it a 'rebulding year.'

afeter 9-11 it all went down hill.. this city is in a state of lock down, and the "FEAR" made everyone conform..
