It doesn't seem like that long ago I stumbled apon dubstep and at the time that was clearly the exception not the rule. Now it's apparently the ruleMost of my tunes are half step. I feel like I myself am trapped into it sometimes but don't start a new producer out like that please. If that is what they want to do then fine. I can think of a few dubstep tunes that don't have much sub in the b-line too so I wouldn't say that it is a requirement. Like I say just give em a little history lesson and they can take it from there.
dood.. it's sooooo not the rule... my last tune didn't really have any snares
Guys dun make this genre stale or we are ALL fucked... seriously.. be innovative..

quoted for emphasis. i think i know who you're talking about dan. i find this a little funny since he hates all the dubstep i've played for him.setspeed wrote: ..and to forget most of the builds, kick rolls and cheesy lead lines that come witih breaks.
also that tunes don't need to be 6 minutes in dubstep!

Far too many new producers and producers coming from other genres seem to write really really predictable tunes because they're paranoid that if they do something remotely original it "won't be dubstep."
So yeah, 140bpm with a heavy sub.
this is what we did and we got shot down by the labels lol

Tell him to play with the idea of drums being half the speed of the Bass which is a lot of fun after producing 120-174 drums for years and years. Also tell him to stop worrying about his kick cutting through his Bassline, after years of stressing, he can relax on that. Tell him to lose the plot with basslines, hog wild. The cutting kicks at 100hrz? well lots and lots of tracks have full frequency kicks and I'm not just talking about loefah style 808 booms. Don't tell him about the Dub delay. Let the rest of it use it our tracks, get him to use his own ideas.
(same goes for 2step beats
)
Then after he comes up with his own interesting but perhaps wrong but original take on what it could sound like, a month or two later buy him Watch the Ride - Skream(or whatever does it for you). That way he'll get ideas then he gets to know possible frameworks to fit his ideas around in terms of styles of releases.
