Sorry - what are these artefacts you're talking about? How do they manifest themselves?
You suggest that the mathematics depends on your point of view

, and then say you're talking from a theoretical point of view. Do you get more theoretical than the mathematics?
I'm confused

I'm pretty sure it is a language thing, and my German is 'scheisse'.

Maybe its more about my scheiss english
The theory behind signal processing is mathematics of course (mainly fourier and wavelet transformation). With "depends on your point of view" I meant if you look at it from a theoretical or a practical view.
From the theoretical point boosting in digital is imperfect, but from a practical point of view this might be neglectable. My experience is that the latter depends on the quality of the EQ you use, but that experience might be subjective.
Hope this clarifies...

OR you could stop worrying about theories of signal processing and artefacts and just make good music.
I highly doubt it matters all that much these days if you use a decent quality EQ whether you are boosting or reducing. I know people are always going on about keeping it simple and less is more but seriously unless you are coldplay you are probably going to be OK.

It may not matter in terms of dsp stuff whether you're cutting or boosting, but how you approach these things makes a lot of difference sonically and musically
But yes... enough geekitude

I find myself only cutting, very rarely boosting. Not knowingly, just...Have to try what boosting can do
