a well mixed tune should require no mastering at all.

+1. occasionally put a tiny bit of limiting on if it needs a push but I try to get the mix great without mastering, because I'm not a mastering engineer.

I don't think that's the case at all. Granted a well mixed tune shouldn't require excessive/ corrective mastering but a professional engineer can most definitely add extra sparkle and definition to any mix.
