the thing is if youre gonna do half step you have to do it very well. seems like all the newcommer producers are jumping on that as well, but without the necessary scope and sensitivity to really pull it off. halfstep for an hour straight in a rave makes me feel like LEAVING

Think there were some pretty good breakstep tracks - some of the Dub Child and Toasty Boy stuff's pretty hot and of course that Mrk 1 and Darqwan tune from a while ago. To be honest a lot of that Texture stuff's pretty amazing too - sick bass and mad riddims - something to be encouraged I think.

And of course Lion by Vex'd - heavy as you like

I dunno about market forces to be honest, I think it's possibly more to do with imitation/trends.

There's that thread "what can dubstep learn from DnB?" - my only comment was that taking too much reference from the scene itself can lead to stagnation somewhat, and I feel that's perhaps partly my issue here. Producers are seeing peeps like Loefah (who really CAN work the halfstep format) succeed, and trying to emulate that sound perhaps, with variable results. I guess the meteoric rise of Yunx has also pushed the halfstep sound quite hard

don't get me wrong here, like I say I hope I'm not sounding negative, just that I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on the matter.

i love the half step. youngsta basically defined what i like about the sound so i guess that's where it's come from.

prefer menacing rhythms to bouncy rave tunes - which is what a lot of two step sounds like to me apart from some of the burial shit... although i may get a serious flaming for saying it.

Yeah, rythmic diversity is important for sure!

Half step is cool, but its nice to mix it up.

One of my top releases at the mo is Splash, and its a good example of this.

Not exactly a new tune though...

It's odd how people bitch on about dnb being mindless drug music but can't see the same thing happening with dubstep. If you have to be that off your tits to get into it - it's really not that good.

well i was half joking (;)) but your contention assumes stoner=tedium

it really is music for stoners. i mean look at dub.

it all sounds cool enough when you're not high, but some things just work so much better when yr blazed.

it sucks to admit, but i bet 99% of us are stoners.

Nah, had my moments myself, I just think a lot of music made by people that are too stoned doesn't have to do that much to keep the interest. Reason I know this - cutting down on the weed due to too much over the years and listening to loads of music that doesn't really do it for me without blazing up.

Nowadays I generally listen to most music sober, so I prefer to find music that's psychoactively stimulating rather than having to take something psychoactive to find music stimulating
